What Changes Does McDonald's Need to Make?

The struggling fast-food giant's sales have fallen recently and their new CEO, Steve Easterbrook, unveiled a turnaround plan on Monday morning. And he did not mince words when discussing the company's problems.

Recognizing that recent performance was "poor" and that "the numbers don't lie" - some of the challenges he faces are:

  • Tough competition from growing burger chains like Shake Shack, Five Guys and Smashburger (consumers feel that burgers from other chains taste better and are made from higher quality ingredients even though they cost more)
  • Consumers are also embracing "fast casual food" dining from Chipotle and Panera
  • There is increased competition from a full blown breakfast war, notably from Taco Bell, and the McMuffin is under fire

But what Easterbrook really wants to change is the quality of the food and the stale brand image. He stressed that they need to innovate more. What do you think?

I would love to see McDonalds have an allergy list in store. I have asked for one,.and have been told to call a number. I thinkit would be very helpful also to offer some choices for dairy and gluten free people. More fruit , maybe a small veggie snack pack , or even gluten free buns .

I think McDonald's should make their focus clear. It looks as if the stores have become so ubiquitous trying to achieve contradictory goals at the same time, such as healthy and unhealthy, coffee house quality and large-volume casual (lower) quality. How about separating the two; 1. high line with smaller portion and higher quality food with healthy options offered at a little higher price, and 2. casual line with large volume at lower cost? I also suggest that they exert better quality control of their product so what they offer will be consistent. I often find their burgers not layered well enough (jumping all over). Safety of food being a large concern in this current world, they should pay closer attention to where they procure the ingredients. Implementing a full disclosure policy in case of accidents should also be considered seriously.

I think serving breakfast all day long was a good move on their part who doesn't like breakfast? but there are a few other things that I would change as well or add to their menu. I think they need a vegetarian option. For example I would like for them to add a veggie burger on their menu. I would also like for them to sell salads as a side dish. My 5 year old daughter loves salads and I always have to get a salad when I go there while the kids get happy meals just so she can have some of it. She would love a salad happy meal over a burger option. Or maybe be able to have a cheese burger happy meal and a side salad instead of fries. People like options and being able to customize their meals. I believe it would help them in the long run.

It would be nice to have some additional side item choices instead of just fries.

Something that could really help McDonald's to have vegetarian options for people who do not eat meat. Healthy options are always a plus!!!

Offering healthier options, but I don't think they should change their fries. McDonald's has the BEST french fries of any chain. Please don't change them. Healthier salad and sandwich options would be a welcome change. I like the suggestions some else made about having fruit available for their pancakes.

Maybe using a higher quality beef and smaller portions. A "Lite & Fit" menu would be a nice addition. At least it would put healthier options together for those of us who count calories or just don't want what they try to pass off as a "burger!"

Fast food is fast food. Keep it that way. There are many other establishments that serve healthy foods out there. Consumers can choose.
