What Changes Does McDonald's Need to Make?

The struggling fast-food giant's sales have fallen recently and their new CEO, Steve Easterbrook, unveiled a turnaround plan on Monday morning. And he did not mince words when discussing the company's problems.

Recognizing that recent performance was "poor" and that "the numbers don't lie" - some of the challenges he faces are:

  • Tough competition from growing burger chains like Shake Shack, Five Guys and Smashburger (consumers feel that burgers from other chains taste better and are made from higher quality ingredients even though they cost more)
  • Consumers are also embracing "fast casual food" dining from Chipotle and Panera
  • There is increased competition from a full blown breakfast war, notably from Taco Bell, and the McMuffin is under fire

But what Easterbrook really wants to change is the quality of the food and the stale brand image. He stressed that they need to innovate more. What do you think?

Go back to fresh cut fries.Their fries don't taste like potatoes.Offer your full menu at all times of the day.So if you want to pick up a burger in the am or have pancakes for dinner,you can!

They should add a toppings bar. If people could put on their own toppings that would speed things up. For the same reason people should be able to get their own ketchups and sauces for the same reason.

Seemingly, the mass production concept is now problematic. Maybe if McDonald's would prepare smaller batches of higher quality foods (with healthier side options) they might impact a more diversified client.

i wish they would offer more vegetarian options- i do NOT like the fish sandwich. A veggie burger or some really good salads like wendys does- would be awesome. I would love to see vegetarian options on the breakfast menu too, like an egg and cheese biscuit or perhaps some soy meat patties. I order the egg/cheese biscuit all the time but they often get it wrong since its not on the menu

As a vegetarian, I would really love to see more vegetarian-friendly options and protein sources, such as veggie burgers, quinoa, Greek yogurt, etc.

They are spreading themselves too thin and need to go back to the basics. Just make sure those basics include using real beef and chicken that has been raised ethically and without antibiotics, and other foods free from artificial ingredients.

Maybe they could offer some gourmet burgers. A little more of a variety to make things more exciting for customers. For example maybe an omelette breakfast sandwich. Also have customers be able to customize their meals. Still trying to not raise prices too much since customers sometimes don't mind paying a little more but not too much since that is one of the benefits to a fast food restaurant. The customer wants a variety of quality food that is quick but does not break the bank!

I would love if McDonals put more fruit and veggie into kids meal. I would love to buy more good meal for my kids, without stopping them to McDonalds because so many grease and fat food there

I think they need to do what they do best... burgers and fries... but do it with higher quality. I think they're trying to do too many things at once. They need to streamline and stop pushing every little thing they offer... just concentrate on a few. They still have a huge following. The customers will come back if the quality improves.
