What Changes Does McDonald's Need to Make?

The struggling fast-food giant's sales have fallen recently and their new CEO, Steve Easterbrook, unveiled a turnaround plan on Monday morning. And he did not mince words when discussing the company's problems.

Recognizing that recent performance was "poor" and that "the numbers don't lie" - some of the challenges he faces are:

  • Tough competition from growing burger chains like Shake Shack, Five Guys and Smashburger (consumers feel that burgers from other chains taste better and are made from higher quality ingredients even though they cost more)
  • Consumers are also embracing "fast casual food" dining from Chipotle and Panera
  • There is increased competition from a full blown breakfast war, notably from Taco Bell, and the McMuffin is under fire

But what Easterbrook really wants to change is the quality of the food and the stale brand image. He stressed that they need to innovate more. What do you think?

I love McDonald's. I think it can be a bit expensive value-wise. I think the Dinner Box specials they have are a great idea - and very cost effective. I'd like to see them do a Breakfast Box - providing a good value for family's for breakfast. Should help compete with other breakfast places.

They need to work on the quality of the food, specifically the burger patties and chicken breasts.

I think they should pay their employees A decent wage so that they will be respectful and helpful with the customers

I think that McDonalds has been successful because they have always been consistent. Keep the burgers and McChickens that have been a staple for many years and keep up the quality. I think they do a fine job of offering healthier options to the consumers that want them (grilled chicken, salads, etc) If I want a taco, I will go somewhere else so I really dont want McDonalds to start adding new products that dont really fit with the McDonalds brand. It is nice when they offer a limited time items but I dont want to see tacos and hot dogs on the menu. Most kids love to go to McDonalds so they should keep the chicken nuggets but make sure they are healthy (all chicken meat, no antibiotics, etc.) A better salad menu would be nice. Keep up with the quality and the customers will continue to support McDonalds. I have not gone to a Burger King in years as the quality dropped.

If I can make one change at McDonald's what would it be? I would add turkey on the menu, because people bring it up all the time. A lot of people recently started staying away from pork. I feel that it would be a great alternative for anything that contains pork. This would be great for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This will be crowdpleasing and I feel a lot of people will like the idea. Another idea I have is a steak sandwich for lunch and dinner

I would love to see more options for the grownup meal sides. Just like the kids get choices for their meals I would like some choices too.

Please stop charging extra for a bottle of water with the purchase of a meal. When I bought a meal, they charged the difference between the price of a soda and the bottle of water. If you really want to have healthy options, then just give the bottle of water, regardless of the price. .

There is a lot of things McDonald's could do but focusing on better quality food is starters along with the food sales are down because at least in central new york, our dollar menu has about three or four things on it. The mcchicken is no longer a dollar its a dollar nineteen before taxes. So kids who use to get four sandwiches can now only get three, along with one less item sold, you are also losing about .38 cents in that transaction. Yes, other customers who don't worry about the cost wont changed their order, but I also have worked at a McDonald's most of our customers are middle class or lower so they will stop an question the price. Along with summer is coming an kids will soon be out with their own money they worked hard for or the allowance they got which inst usually more then five to ten dollars.

Maybe make a larger value menu. I've seen some fast food places really step it up and keep making unique and different options and add them to the value menu. This makes it more fun to try new and different things without wasting so much money. I find that there isn't a wide selection of food I eat from Mcdonald's. I think of other places and there's so many choices I would like to choose from so it makes it less redundant and more exciting. Mcdonald's has a few a pretty good things but not as tempting as other places to be honest. Same ol'!
