When we found out that our SheSpeaks staffer Emily is pregnant and due in September, we just had to compare stories, grilling her about all the new ways social media has impacted the experience. Turns out that pregnancy itself has not changed since the dawn of civilization, but the way we handle it sure has: Gender-Reveal Parties! Birth Announcements on Facebook! Pregnancy Tracking Apps! We needed to know more...

Read on to celebrate the fun that is pregnancy, and enter to win a $100 gift card to Spafinder.com so you can treat yourself this Mother's Day!

How did you announce that you were pregnant?

  • Emily: I told close friends/family on the phone or in person early in my pregnancy, then after the first trimester posted a cartoon my husband drew on Facebook.

  • Aliza (mom to 10 year-old Cayla and 8 year-old Zoe): For our family and close friends, we emailed a photo of the sonogram with the subject line, "Our delivery is on its way." Yes, we thought we were very clever and yes, it was sent via email. Only college kids were on Facebook at the beginning of my first pregnancy!

What’s with the gender-reveal parties? Are showers now considered passé?

  • Emily: Everyone wants to hear about the gender! I have been asked a lot if I'm having a girl or boy and we haven't been able to tell via ultrasound yet.  We're having gender-neutral baby showers with my family and my in-laws and the showers will be co-ed!
  • Carol (mom to 16 year-old Charlie & 12 year-old Melissa): We chose not to find out the gender of either of our babies until they were born. I love surprises! But my co-workers threw me a coed shower where they each filled out a questionnaire guessing the baby's arrival date, weight, name, college and career. They put all these in an album with photos. I still have it although the "baby" is now 16!

With all the internet resources available, are you even shopping in-store? And how are you deciding what to buy?

  • Emily: I’ve been relying heavily on Amazon reviews, and some product round-ups from bloggers I like. We set up an Amazon registry and have been slowly adding to it, but plan to go in-store to do some research in-person to help us decide what to buy, then will add more to the Amazon registry.
  • Susan (mom to 9 year-old Samuel & 5 year-old Alex): When I was first pregnant ten years ago, everyone I knew had the book ‘Baby Bargains’. I brought the book to Babies R' Us when I went to make my registry there. We picked whatever items that Baby Bargains recommended and Babies R' Us sold.

What research are you doing to learn about pregnancy and the new baby?

  • Emily: I use the Ovia app which I use to track symptoms and weight gain. I've also enjoyed the podcasts "The Longest Shortest Time" and "Pregnancy Confidential." Books: What to Expect When You're Expecting, What to Expect the First Year, Expecting Better, The Happiest Baby on the Block (and many more to come, I'm sure!)
  • Susan: Glad to see books are still being used, especially What to Expect When You're Expecting!
  • Melissa (mom to 7 month-old Cameron): I downloaded the What to Expect App which tracks your pregnancy week by week, giving you updates on size, weight, development, and symptoms. I couldn't wait to read what was happening each week. But for the not-so-technical side of it, I found the best and most honest advice always came from other moms (and still does!)

Happy Mother's Day from the SheSpeaks Team!

Enjoy every moment and don't feel bad for sneaking in a nap too when the baby is sleeping, Take lots of pictures and gives lots of hugs and kisses - they grow up so quick!

Everyone will give you criticism. Don't let it get to you. Go with your best judgement and you will be fine. We were all first timers after all.

When I was pregnant many years ago with my son, my mother told me that I was pregnant before I could say anything. She said there was just something about the way I looked that she knew and then I confirmed it . I remember being so afraid after he was born whether I would know how to take care of him but my mom was my coach and I don't know what I would have done without her. It's like you just feel your way through and everything just falls into place.

The best advice I could give you (as a mom to 3 now), is to really (like reeeeeally) relish in your alone time and the time you get with your partner. I mean, do as many date nights as you can in a week...and take as many long hot baths (complete with dimmed lights, candles, and music) as you can stand, in a week. These moments alone with your partner, and with yourself in a bathroom...those are the 2 things that I wish I could get more of now that I have my 3 beautiful children. Granted, I get to have a date night maybe once a month or two...but those hot baths? I haven't had one in over a year. I haven't showered with the door shut in over a year...heck, I haven't showered in the bathroom ALONE in over a year! LOL...not to scare anyone or anything ;) Oddly enough, I wouldn't give up my chaotic dinners and showers as a group for a hot bath any day. I absolutely love being a mom, and you will too. Just remember to take a few extra hot baths for me...would you, please?

Advice from my sister when I was pregnant with my daughter (now 9): every age is the best age. Enjoy it all.

Always take help when you need it. My advice is to make time to take care of yourself. Often as mothers we expect perfection out of ourselves. We need to remember to relax! Then we can be top of the line parents! :-)

Best advice I can think of (from a mom of 6 yr&2 yr old girls) - #1 choose your battles (think "Want to wear a ridiculous outfit to eat your dinner?" As long as you eat -have at it)... #2 was passed down from my mom- no matter how mad you get b/c of something they do/get into, grab a camera and snap a pic or two.... If it made you this mad now, you'll want the pic to laugh at in the future (when u forget the offense lol)

Enjoy being pregnant. I loved it. That first time I felt him move. It was like a butterfly wing. I did sit UPS with my kneed bent. It helps to strengthen your stomach and up thigh muscles. It aids in carrying the baby and helps the delivery. I always did them laying on the bed.

My best advise to expecting moms: create a baby registry at amazon.com: http://amzn.to/1Wqg2Rk It's universal (you can add items from any website), and they give you additional discounts, special offers and even a baby welcome box full of freebies! You also get a chance to win everything on your registry - just by creating one! All expecting parents and those with kids under 2 are eligible. This was literally the best thing I have done with my youngest: it kept all my "wished for" items neatly organized, it was super easy to maintain for me and super easy for everyone to shop - they could choose to ship the gift straight to us, and we were getting surprises in the mail long after the baby was born :) Those extra amazon discounts were also appreciated: baby things can be expensive, but I got 50% off diapers, 15% off ANYTHING at amazon, 25% off maternity, 25% off vitamins and that saved me a lot of money.
