My son is not athletic but we got him into karate and he loves it. He just won a trophy last week and he was so proud of himself. We support him through encouragement and driving to lessons three times a week!

My nephew, Lucas, who has Down Syndrome has excelled by participating in wrestling and basketball. He has been given the opportunity to be seen for his ability and not his disability! He does not care if they win or lose, he is just so happy to be part of a team!

My friends son was starting to get heavily into drugs when he started playing hockey. Turned his life around. Suddenly he wanted to start making healthy changes. All from the discipline and structure of the sport.

The best way to motivate any kid is to have a couple rules about how long video games can be played and get the kids outdoors. You need to join in and throw a ball or kick the soccer ball around with them. I would say let them win so they feel they are beating an adult but but they usually beat me anyway! Don't force any kid to join a sport they have no interest in but if they do choose to participate in something, support it completely and make sure they honor their choice and team by seeing it through to the end of the season. Our whole family including aunts, uncles and grandparents attend sporting events of the kids. It means a lot! When I was young we played and stayed outdoors. Kids have become couch potatoes so you have to encourage them and make outdoor activities and sports fun. It's good for their bodies and minds!
