Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.

The Rituals

Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.

The Costumes

As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging.  This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions?  Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Tell us your favorite Halloween Costume in the comments below and you'll be entered to Win 1 of 4 Spooky Halloween Prizes! The prizes are a TWIX® Halloween Prize Pack, Halloween Chef, Halloween Decorations & Halloween Accessories packs . See below for more details. My favorite halloween costume (well, I have two) my daughter dressed up as a butterfly one year, she was the cutest little butterfly. My son when he was 4 dressed up as Buzz Lightyear and had the inflatable "wings"....too cute!

I went to a large office party as a MAIL ORDER BRIDE. I was in all white, wore the elaborate headpiece from my wedding, had a "Miss America" type banner across me that said, "Mail Order Bride." Went to the post office and asked for all the stickers they had and applied them to my entire dress. Carried a bouquet of flowers with ribbons trailing down. Loved this costume and so did everyone else!

Personally, I don't dress up. Both my kids wanted to be Michael Jackson this year, but I think my older one wants to be a scary werewolf more. We stick to basic things. I don't use makeup because my little one is allergic to colors on his face, especially colored icing.

I made a costume after seeing it on tv, it was a cheeseburger made out of painted foam pieces with pickles, lettuce, the works, it was so cute and I worked as a waitress which made it even cuter.

My favorite Halloween costume had to be last year when my daughter wanted to be a princess and she suggested since I was a mommy I should dress up as a "mummy". It was the best suggested costume I have ever dressed as!

my favorite costume is for my daughter and our dog. My daughter is going as a cowgirl and our dog, a brindle mastif, is going as her horse. My husband made a saddle and a mane for her and my daughter will lead her with a rope attached to her collar!! They are an adorable pair!!

My favorite costume is a metallic blue disco king costume that my son wore when he was 11 months old. He also had an Afro wig on him. It was cute and hilarious!

My favorite costume is one that my mom made for my oldest daughter. She went as a queen and the gown was beautiful. Mom used a royal purple color and put white lace around the sleeves and neck line. White lace also was laced in the back to make the dress adjustable. We bought a real tiara and put her hair in a bun and put the tiara around it. She was so adorable.

I have always loved animal costumes. What other time of the year do you get to dress up as an animal and people not give you funky looks! My almost 2 year old is dressing up as a dinosaur this year. My 4 year old and 11 year old are dressing up as Mario and Luigi, and my 8 year old daughter is dressing up as a Cat. I love this time of year!!

A couple of years ago, my husband and I had the most fun EVER at a Halloween party- and won 1st place! He was dressed as Jack from Jack-in-the Box restaurant but instead of Jack's hat he usually wears, he replaced it with a witch hat so he looked like Jack dressed up for Halloween! I was Jack's wife but I looked just like Wendy from Wendy's restaurant. I was carrying a baby that looked like...a mini Ronald McDonald. Plus, I was sporting a black eye and Jack's signature smiley face was replaced with a frown. We got big laughs out of these costumes!
