Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.
The Rituals
Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.
The Costumes
As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging. This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions? Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Good Luck and Happy Halloween!
My favorite costume from being a child was a clown. I tried last year to make my son a clown and he was so scary looking. He looked like the clown from IT. This year my kids are goingas Elvis (6 year old superfan) and a scarecrow (2 year old Wizard of Oz fan). We are so excited!
My daughters costume 2 years ago was my favorite. She dressed up as medusa. wish I could post a pic. I made her a white sheet like dress wrapped at the shoulder and attached a pretty pin. Then I made her "hair" out of a green knit hat and attached pipe cleaners which I wrapped and braided yarn around it. Then I added eyes and tongues to the "snakes" awesome and it turned out really well
A few years a go my oldest dressed as Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. She even had the fake dolly lashes. She looked so adorable. We found the costume in storage and now my youngest is going to be Sally this year.
A few years ago my friend made her own costume and went a a Facebook wall! You'd have to see it to believe it but she spent hours designing it and it was perfect!
My favorite costume was when I was in 4th grade. I put together a scarecrow costume for myself. I had straw in my arms and legs, painted my face, wore old overalls and thought I was the most imaginative kid that day. My parents always made my costumes, so this was my turn to show them what I could do =)
my mother made my costumes as a child and made my kids as well. She made a hershey kiss costume for my daughter that was too cute!
My favorite halloween costume is hard lol I would have to say its when we dressed my brother as lady gaga lol I LOVE doing makeup and it was such a blast or dressing up as the infamous pumpkin when i was little nothing will make you laugh more at having a pillow stuffed in your costume to give you the appropriate "roundness" that you need to pull off the look not to mention all the orange lol
My favorite costume was one I made while I was in college. I live right near Hershey, PA so I decided to bring a bit of Hershey to my college campus and dress up like a hershey kiss. I took copper tubing and formed a large circle, then took silver lame-type fabric and created a "kiss" which wrapped around the tubing for the bottom of the kiss, then cinched around my neck for the top of the kiss. Then I wore a silver baseball cap with a tag sticking out of the top that said Hershey Kisses.....the whole costume was a hit!
I absolutely love zombie costumes. As for my children dressing up, I actually love any costume they chose to wear. It's more exciting to see them so happy.
My favorite halloween costume was my sons infant costume that doubled as a snow suit because it was soo cold that halloween. It was an insulated white one piece with paw prints on the hands and feet, a black tail on the butt and black ears on the hood...he was a baby Snoopy!
I am going to an adult Halloween party dressed as Flo from the the Progressive commercials. The costume itaelf is so simple and included items I already had in my house - white apron, white pants, polo... The hardest part will be getting the hair just right!
I love the custom made Mad Hatter costume that we had last year it was so exciting and different!
Charlie Chaplin has been a staple. It's cute and pretty easy as long as you have a good hat!
My favorite costumes are animals. I don't dress up for Halloween anymore and I like cute kid costumes rather than scary ones.
I love my daughters costume...she is dressing up as a cheetah this Halloween. It is absolutely adorable on her and its perfect for her, since she loves animals so much...
