Tell Us Your Favorite Halloween Costume & Win

Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.

The Rituals

Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.

The Costumes

As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging.  This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions?  Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Tell us your favorite Halloween Costume in the comments below and you'll be entered to Win 1 of 4 Spooky Halloween Prizes! The prizes are a TWIX® Halloween Prize Pack, Halloween Chef, Halloween Decorations & Halloween Accessories packs . See below for more details. My younger sister dressed as a retro Hollywood starlet one year. It was so darn cute! Our step grandmother had given her this black dress that was off the shoulder, a pink scarf, some cat eye sunglasses, and an old cigarette holder that held a candy cigarette like a champ! She had some kitten heels she borrowed and stuffed with tissue. She walked all dramatically, gesturing with her "cigarette" walking our dog. She got extra candy that night!

My favorite costume was the year I went as a ghost. My mom painted my face like a skeleton using liquid white shoe polish and black eyeliner. Everyone thought I was wearing a mask!

At my husband's work a number of his female co-workers are great friends and fill the day with chatter as they work- the unity is celebrated and lovingly they tease- The ladies actually refer to themselves as the "henhouse" So they are dressing as chickens and have asked my husband to be the farmer! I cannot wait to see their homemade chicken costumes! My husband has spent a weekend distressing a pair of coverall's, finding knee high rubber boots, and using caulk to make faux chicken doo with feathers stuck in it on his straw hat. To top it off, he is filling a pail with candy "corn" to feed the hens.. :-)

I guess my favorite costume would be the year my brother went as Santa Claus carrying a sign that read...."So I get confused". People laughed so hard at him it was priceless. Kind of made my "witch" costume not worthy.

I love the classics (witches, vampires, etc) but I am a sucker for renaissance or older looking costumes.

My mom always made some of the most creative costumes when I was a kid, like a box of popcorn, Zorro, and Simba, all handmade. But I must say, my favorite costume was when I went as Marie Antoinette, with full makeup and hair! I rented out a humongous dress and even drove the car with the hoop. I did my hair with a homemade cushion and teased my hair all on top of it. It was fantastic!

when my nephew was about a year and a 1/2 and my niece 3 months, they were a 20's gangster and a flapper. My nephew had a pin striped suit, black hat, and a toy gun. My niece had a fringed dress.

One year my daughter dressed up as a bubble gum machine. We found a big clear plastic container that she fit into and put different colored balloons in it. she wore a black shirt and pants and a small pillow box hat in which we painted a little key circle on it. On the front we made a little sign stating gum balls 25 cents and she handed out samples.

The Halloween costume that I really like and was worned by my son when he was 1 year old was a skunk costume...it was not scary but it was really cute. It had a fur mohawk on the head which was styled as hood so it framed my son's face. I would have posted a pic of it if its possible. :)

My favorite costume was my daughter's black cat costume from when she was 2. I cut up a fuzzy black bath robe and turned it into the costume and it actually came out adorable!

My youngest is going to be Izzy from Jake and the NEverland pirates. I made the costume with yarn for hair hanging out of the bandana and homemade boos and complete with clip on hoop earrings! She looks TOO CUTE! Love it!
