Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.
The Rituals
Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.
The Costumes
As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging. This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions? Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?
Tell us your favorite Halloween Costume in the comments below and you'll be entered to Win 1 of 4 Spooky Halloween Prizes! Good Luck and Happy Halloween!
I love costumes based on TV shows, movies and video games. It's fun to not only dress up, but to pretend to be someone else entirely. This year me, the hubby and our son are going as characters from Venture Bros. I'm going to be a female Gary, the husband will be Brock Samson and our son is going to be The Monarch. I do miss when my son was little enough to wear those full footed suits for Halloween. He was the most adorable little lion even if he slept through the whole thing.
My favorite costume was one I made for my son. Because he wanted to be Charizard from Pokemon and that was not a costume you could buy. I borrowed a sewing machine from a friend (mind you I had never sewn before) and she showed me how to use a pattern. It turned out really good and I was so proud of my accomplishment.
I think my most creative costume was when I went as a "cereal killer." I emptied out mini boxes of cereals, stuck a plastic knife in each one, added fake blood, and attached them all over my shirt. My favorite costume as a child, however, was when I went as a mommy ghost. I took an old sheet and cut out eyes and a mouth for my costume. For the baby ghost I wrapped another old sheet around a ball and then drew eyes and a mouth on it. For some reason I was just enraptured with the idea of the baby ghost, even though I had to carry it around all night!
My favorite costume was a stick of double mint gum. My mom took a green pillow case and a marker and drew the double mint gum logo on the pillow case. i wore a grey turtle neck and grey sweatpants under the pillow case.
The best one I have seen this year is the child dressed up as a toilet!!! And you raise the lid and that is where you put the candy!! So adorable and very thoughtful on the part of the parents!! Love it!!!
I loved my baby girl as a ballerina. Chubby thighs in tights and a little tutu. Adorable.
My favorite Halloween costume is a mermaid. I love anything with an ocean or princess theme. If I was going to go wicked, I would dress up as a witch or evil queen.
In our house, we like to get creative and use whatever is in our home. One year my son went as a pizza delivery guy. We covered an old pizza box with paper then made our own company name. We also wrote the name on a $1 painter's hat. He used the pizza box to collect his candy. It was such a great costume that he wore it two years in a row.
My favorite costume was last Halloween. I dressed up my 10 month old as a monkey, and I went as a big banana! We were quite the pair!
Dressed my dog Roxy as a mermaid (75 pound Chocolate Labrador) long blonde wig - sewed a shiny green mermaid tail - she wore a lei of tropical flowers . She was in the Halloween pet parade and won a prize. Used to make all my kids costumes too. Hmmmm.. what can we do this year?
At three years old my daughter dressed up as Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz." My Mom made the outfit, I found some red shoes and applied the glitter to them. We then found a basket and placed a black stuffed dog into it. Once her hair was braided, she was Dorothy. Years later, and I still have the costume tucked away.
One year, I had lost alot of weight and was down to a size 12 - first time I had been in YEARS - I wore a sexy Red Devil outfit and looked hot! I love that costume!
My favorite costume that I made for my son was a PB&J sandwich. He was 3 and he was soooo cute! I just used 2 foam pillow cushions and cut them out into the shape of bread, lined them with brown felt, and added purple felt to one slice and tan felt to the other. I then made straps to lay across his shoulders and he was good to go!
I think almost every little girl wants to be a princess. As a grown up now, I am leaning towards a lobster. You cannot find this in stores so I will just have to get creative! :)
I like a good old fashioned witch costume tall pointed hat and everything else.
