Please get your mammograms

Please remember to get a yearly mammogram. I have breast cancer and I am going through chemo and radiation. I did not get a mammogram because I did not have insurance and was not tested for 4 years. I also never did a self exam since it does not run in the family. It could save your life.

This is great advice!

If you don't have insurance, you still need to get a mammogram. Don't be afraid to call around to all the Radiology facilities in your area (and your gyno too if they do mammograms there) and ask them to make you a deal for being a "self pay" patient. Chances are good that you will get a reduced rate. Hope that helps someone!

They may charge you even less if you pay in cash... it's worth a try.

When should a woman begin getting mammograms? I am 21 and cancer does not run in my family history.

Sometimes your local health department offers free mammograms and PAP tests. I too don't do self exams but maybe once a year(I often times fall asleep) because I have fibrocystic breast disease and it is difficult to tell the difference between a breast lump and a fibrocystic lump. But recently I found a teeny weeny lump and some really bad thickening in one breast. Went through the local health dept. and the doctor examined me, was very concerned about both the lump and the thickening and ordered a mammogram plus an ultrasound for the one breast. The radiologist decided there was no need for the ultrasound. Grrr! The thickening is still there, and I don't think that area really got squished enough to be included in the "picture" since it was right where the breast connects to the chest. I have changed my tune about self exams and will try to remember to do them. The shower exam doesn't work since I'm big breasted. It hurts more inthe shower to.

I am really sorry to hear. You are in my prayers Rose50! I am 35 and I had my first Mammogram last September. I have a 2cm benign cyst in my right breats. My period started at 9 and my mom had cancer and no kids. So I am a high risk! The doctor was telling me I should have gotten my first mammogram @ 24

I typed in free mammogram at google and I found a couple of free locations in NYC.I just lost my insurance about 5 months ago. I got another one. a month ago.

It hurts really bad, because my breat was so tender at the time(suffering from pms)

I am a hypochondriac and I am glad I am one step ahead of the game when it comes to my health!

I am keeping you in my prayers I was diagnosed with Breast cancer at 31yrs old and had never had a mammogram so everyone do your self breast exams too they saved my life be strong I have been thru the surgery and chemo and I just celebrated my 5 yrs.

I am so sorry to hear about you. Did you know that most states have a program to completely pay for mamaograms if you don't have insurance? My husband is now on disability and I lost my insurance but have been able to get yearly mamograms with the Wellness program for women. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your struggle.

People (that includes men) do not have to have a family history of breast cancer in order to contract (don't know if that's the right word) it. There are now cases where there is no fam history, and women (and men) are affected!

We are not experts, and therefore, I'd be uncomfortable telling you when to get a mammography. Ask your gyn.

Rose50, thank you for sharing. Thank God I don't have breast cancer, but have been through 5 biopsies because the cysts was so dense each time, they didn't know what was going on.

My last biopsy, the cyst was the size of a golf ball but was not on the mammography.

Do your self exam. Get your annual gyn exam. There are insurance companies who have Mammo-Mobiles year around, just for women who can't afford to pay.

I have finished with the chemo and radiation treatments. I am feeling well. Even though cancer does not run in my family. Please take care of yourselves. Do not postpone your mammograms. It is easier if it is caught early. Men do get breast cancer also. I have to be followed by the Drs. for the next five years. My hair is starting to grow back. I am fortunate that my family helped me keep my spirits up. It has been a long hard road, I even had at stroke age 51.

I hope everything is going good for you. I wanted to mention that just because there is no history of BC in the family does not mean that it can't happen. There was no history in my family. My daughter was 31 yrs old when she was diagnosed with BC. She had been diagnosed a years earlier with fibrocistic disease. When she found the mass in the other breast she thought it was the same thing. Unfortunately, it wasn't. She was in stage 3A of inflammatory BC which is the worst kind to have. She lived a year. Part of the grieving process is anger and I was so angry with her for not going to the doctor when she first found the mass because she might be here today if she had. Also 3 weeks after she died I had surgery for a pre-cancerous mass and 1 yr later my twin sister had BC, please everyone do your self-exams, have your mammograms and also ask for a ultrasound because mammograms don't always show up everything.

I agree, I am 34 and have been having mammograms and breast ultrasounds done since I was 30. Both of my 2 sisters were diagnosed with breast cancer within 4 months time. The mammograms saved their lives, neither one knew they had cancer tumors. I have fibrocystic breast disease and to tell you the truth I probably could not tell the difference between breast cancer tumors, or the cyst. The reason they do the ultrasound is because I have dense breast tissue and they could not even tell if cancer was not there or not. So some women, especially young women need breast ultrasound with their mammograms. Ask your doctors. And another thing I think insurance companies need to do is lower the age for mammograms. Since I am under 40 years old I have to pay out of my pocket for my mammogram and ultrasound, which is about $700. I don't think that is right.
