It's a rare day that I don't fall into bed thinking about how busy the day was. I sometimes ask, what am I doing wrong? But when I talk to friends, they all say the same thing: life is busy, it's impossible to get everything done!
I refuse to accept this. There must be ways to save time and still enjoy life without it running us all ragged. So I polled some friends and got some great ideas. Then I tried them out. Read on to find out which tips worked for me - and can work for you too!
How do you save time? Tell us for the chance to win a $50 gift card to either Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts (winner's choice!) and a cute kitchen timer. Plus, submit an easy recipe for a bonus prize. If we use your recipe in an upcoming blog post, we'll send you a $25 Amazon gift card to say thanks!
Most experts say that if you are doing two things at the same time, you are not doing either of them well. I beg to differ. On tasks when my brain runs on autopilot, I'm much more efficient when I multitask. For example...
Make a boring chore fun and you'll want to get to it, like ironing while binge-watching TV or cleaning the bathroom while listening to a podcast.
Exercise with a friend: you'll be getting healthier and finding out the latest gossip. Schedule in a weekly time on your calendar and you'll be more likely to stick with it.
Use waiting time, like your train-commute or your kid's gymnastics class, to cross a few things off your to-do list, That quiet time is perfect for finding dinner recipes, ordering groceries online, or doing vacation research. Alternatively, save that time to catch up on social media, and then resist checking your Facebook feed the rest of the day.
Plan for the unpacking while you are shopping: When unloading groceries from your cart to the conveyor belt at checkout, group them in order of where they go in the house, so they get bagged in that order (dairy together, fruit together etc). Then the groceries are easier to unpack when you get home.
Reminder: My kitchen timer gets a lot of use, but not just for cooking. It's the perfect way to remind me to get things done. For example, I put it on when I throw in a load of laundry so I don't forget to put the wet clothes in the dryer.
Deadline: Timers are also a good way to create an artificial deadline, like when I'm going through the pile of papers my kids brought home from school. I just put on the timer and try to get it all done in 5 minutes - it forces me to make decisions more quickly and keep me focused.
Note: Make sure the timer is in another room and doesn't stop beeping until you manually turn it off. Is it annoying? Definitely. But does it force me to stop what I am doing and change the laundry? Yes.

I make myself a checklist.
Prep for the day the night before - I make a pitcher of cold-brewed coffee to start the week, overnight oats and Mason jar salads for breakfasts and lunches and can be out the door with my coffee and meals for the day with little fuss.
My fave way to make life easier is to pick my outfits out the night before, so I don't have to make decisions in the morning. My best easy recipe is tacos!
My favorite way to make life easier is to play music and dance around while doing chores to make them more fun.
I save time by deciding on the weekend what we are going to eat during the week and buying everything I need. That way I don't have to try and decide what we are going to eat after I get off work and am tired.
Easy recipe is to make homemade pizzas. Either making our own dough or buy a ball of dough at the store and let the kids add sauce, oregano, cheese and (sometimes) a topping and throw it on the grill. Kids rave about their meal and like to help create it too
My time saving tip is to have a temporary hidden space for the kids' artwork/crafts/etc that they come home with and aren't 'keepers' Most of the stuff, I'll be able to get rid of shortly but for those few random things that they remember a week later, I can still pull it out instead of needing to spend the time trying to talk them out of a meltdown
I make like easier by doing food prep and chopping at the beginning of the week on Sundays. My favorite recipe is Jerk Pork Chops, made with jerk sauce, garlic, green peppers, a pound of pork tenderloins, salt, pepper, and onion. Sooo delish!
My favorite easy recipe is a veggie baked potato. I bake a potato and top it with cooked veggies. I'll serve it with a salad on the side for a great meal. I also love serving up veggie burgers with baked sweet potato fries, so easy to make and delicious!
My favorite way to make life easier is to write a to do list every morning to keep you on task and get things done. I do this at work so I know my goals and what to tackle for the day. Also, I make chores like house cleaning more fun by listening to music, dancing with the broom and making it fun and upbeat.
Write a list! Quick go to meal, nachos... Brown some burger, season with taco packet, put on tortillas, top with cheese, sour cream, jalapenos, etc
My favorite is lagsaña and pizza
when I work from home, I'll use my lunch break to get in a work out or run a few errands - helps me have more free time in the evening.
I really thrive when I set time limits and also give myself breaks to just enjoy life. I really have to struggle to stay focused when checking email or doing anything too tedious, so I try to set loose time limits and push through. I've been setting aside time for fun lately so I don't miss out on enjoyable things like reading, watching tv shows, gardening, playing with pets outside, and cooking from scratch. My go-to-recipe for the summer is to roast garden veggies in the oven with cheese, Italian seasoning, salt/pepper, and olive oil. Most things taste surprisingly good roasted and the prep is pretty easy. My hero chef Ina Garten is a big fan of roasting vegetables!
Make a list and stick to your list. Do one task at a time so you don't get side tracked in doing something that was not on your " to do list". Plan enough time to get it done.
