Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.

The Rituals

Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.

The Costumes

As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging.  This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions?  Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Tell us your favorite Halloween Costume in the comments below and you'll be entered to Win 1 of 4 Spooky Halloween Prizes! The prizes are a TWIX® Halloween Prize Pack, Halloween Chef, Halloween Decorations & Halloween Accessories packs . See below for more details. The contest will begin on Wednesday, October 19th and will end at 6 p.m. EST on October 24th.

My favorite costume was as Pippy Longstocking. I wore striped socks, a mismatched dress, & braided pigtails. I drew on freckles and stained some of my teeth with food coloring. It was quite fun! Even won a costume prize.

As unlikely as it sounds I think the best costumes are the ones with the elastic and the masks. These were the best because those were the years when trick-or-treating meant the most. The excitement was uncontainable. Those horrible, painful masks were what many of us longed for, to be someone else for a night. Someone we looked up to and adored. Then the possibility of doing so was still alive. Now as adults we may strive to be different but we know it takes more than a cheap plastic mask with some elastic.

My favortie costume was the incredibale hulk. This was when the costumes was plastic, hot , uncomfortable and the mask wer hard to see out of the eyes. The thing is I really loved the hulk and my sister took my to the city. Where I received alot of candy. It was the only time she took me but we had so much fun. I just love that memory.

My favorite costume was made when my daughter was 8 months old. I put her in a Bjorn carrier and made a turkey costume for her to wear. I made a plate to fit between the bjorn and me, and I dressed up like a chef. I gave her a turkey baster and we got quite a few chuckles!

My favorite Halloween costumes has to be my son's Mario and my nephews Luigi costumes. They looked absolutely adorable with them on, mini versions of the real thing. We got him a Papa Smurf costume this year and the final touch is his real grandpa beard, my kids love Halloween.

I'm so excited about this year's costume. I'm hosting a Halloween party and have decided to make my costume - The Swedish Chef from the Muppets. I have a chef hat, striped shirt, apron and rubber chicken, I just have to figure out those big bushy eyebrows and mustache!

My fave costume for my daughter was her Belle costume from the ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast again my mother made the costume. Lastly I had an Idea for myself this year Iam going to cut out the bottom of a laundry basket connect suspenders to it so I can wear it and have clothes hanging in and around it and I will wear a pair of socks on my hands and boxers as a hat and I will be laundry I am going to add a few dryer sheets to make it complete.

I make my children's costumes every Halloween, and if I had to choose my favorite it would be last years costumes...My then 6 year old daughter was a Barbie cup and saucer filled with hot chocolate and marshmallow topped with a whipped cream hat, she won first place last year for her costume and my then 3 year old son was the kool aid man he was definitely a big hit last year and both costumes were made from things I had around my house so not a dime was spent on their costumes!!
