Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.
The Rituals
Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.
The Costumes
As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging. This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions? Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Good Luck and Happy Halloween!
my favorite costumes were the ones my girls wore for their first Halloween festivities; one was a monkey and the other was a mermaid.
My favorite costume was when my son was a bee. He had some huge wings made out of screen. My husband went as the bee keeper. I have the cutest photo of when he got really tired, he just sat down on the curb on Broad street. He was one tired little bee.
My favorite was 2 years ago when my then 3-year old was an old fashioned golfer. Green argyle vest and matching knee socks, knickers and a newsboy cap. Complete with a small golf bag and clubs. It was so cute! And he loved golf so he loved wearing it as well.
The witch costume is my favorite. You can be a quirkly witch, a traditional witch, scary witch, however my overall favorite is the "good" witch which nobody expects!
I'm a letter carrier so I'm most likely to wear my postal uniform or go as a dog! Postal carrier uniform in my favorite.
Being a computer nerd, which goes way back, my favorite costume was the year I gutted an old computer display monitor fitted it around my head and went to the office party as a computer.
My fiance' is a financial advisor, my favorite costume was the year we dressed up as a bull and a bear to reflect the stock market!
My favorite costume was worn by the school principal last halloween...she dressed as the old lady who swallowed a fly
I love witches costumes. I love that you can taylor it to a child or an adult and to any mood you want. You can go scary, happy, sappy anything you want. Also you can use the basics over and over.
My hubby and I were looking for something quick and simple for a Halloween party. So we both put on tshirts and drew a big "P" on the front, and then we blackened our eyes, and we were the Black Eyed Peas!!! :)
Witches are always my favorite.
When my daughter was about 3 years old we dressed her up as Baby Bop. She had the costume that was green with the purple belly, it even had a hood so she was green all over. We even put green material over her shoes and she wore a green shirt that was the same shade so that you could not see it in the back. She looked just like a walking, talking Baby Bop. She even took 1st or 2nd place in our local costume contest. Another year I dressed my son and daughter, who are 16 months apart, as pirates. She was in a red and black dress that was cut up at the bottom and he was in a red and black pirate suit. Besides the Baby Bop Custome these were the best.
I am most excited about this year's Halloween costume. My 9 year old son is going to be Santa Claus, my husband a reindeer, and my 17 month old daughter will be an elf!
about 20 years ago a friend made the best costume i have ever seen .. to this day ..it was a huge life sized, slice of pepperoni and veggie pizza .. i can still close my eyes and see that slice of pizza dancing and smiling
My favorite costume is one I made from an old pastel plaid suit jacket. I sewed patches on it and added a silk flower to the lapel and even had a handkerchief in the pocket that went on for miles. I painted my face up as a hobo clown and put on a pair of torn jeans with red long underware underneath and an old wool cap. Worked great and since it's homemade, even better!
