Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.

The Rituals

Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.

The Costumes

As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging.  This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions?  Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Tell us your favorite Halloween Costume in the comments below and you'll be entered to Win 1 of 4 Spooky Halloween Prizes! The prizes are a TWIX® Halloween Prize Pack, Halloween Chef, Halloween Decorations & Halloween Accessories packs . See below for more details. My favorite halloween costume was when my aunt, mom, and myself dressed up as the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus.

When I was a kid, my mom made me the best witch costume. She made me a wig of Spanish Moss and used that actor's makeup clay stuff to give me a pointed crooked nose and blacked out a couple of my teeth. I of course also had the black hat, and robe and broomstick. It was awesome. She always made me whatever costume I wanted, including Joan of Arc one year. Those are my favorite Halloween memories, so I plan on doing the same thing with my children!

When I was about 13 I was a trashcan. I bought a plastic trashcan cut out the bottom and attached straps on the inside to I could wear the can. Then I attached the lid to my head. Inside I held a bag so people had to throw the candy inside the trashcan. I would ring the doorbell quickly squat down so the lid would close and wait. The surprised looks and laughs I got all night were great.

My favorite costume was one I made for my daughter. It was something put together real quick with what I had around the house. She was Ellie May Clampett from the old TV series The Beverly Hillibilles. We rolled up her jeans, put on a checkered shirt, tied a rope around her waist and had a long blond wig we tied in two ponytails like Ellie used to wear on the show. What a unique Halloween coutume which was recognized by the old and young because of the shows being re-run on tv at the time. Because she was almost a teenager she looked very authentic in that costume.

My favorite costume was a Jar of Jelly Beans for a Halloween Party while I was in my teens. It was made of a clear plastic bag as large as a garbage bag with holes cut out so I was in it..It was filled with colorful balloons so I looked like a walking Jar of Jelly Beans!

My favorite costumes are the one's you make and embellish yourself! Also, costumes that are really creative and not overly popularized.

I like the "Zombie" pretty much anything, lol, it's easy, cost effective, just scary enough to please the kids. For example, my girls play softball, so this year, they'll be "softball zombies" when they were cheerleaders, they were "cheerleader zombies" it's just thier uniform and some face makeup.

My favorite costume was when I made the kids into mummies! It was super easy and cute. I soaked a white sheet in tea over night and then let it dry. I tore the sheet into strips and sewed them onto sweat pants and a sweat shirt with strips dangling down. Then we painted there faces to make them look all dirty. They were a big hit at the Halloween party!

Two years ago, my two youngest daughters were bacon and eggs. We made the costumes with cardboard, felt and a lot of fabric paint. The girls even won a costume contest at a local Metropolitan Market!

My favorite Halloween cotumes was when my daughter and Son (twins) trick-or-treated as SALT AND PEPPER SHAKERS! They were only 4 years old at the time and they had everyone rolling in the floor with laughter. I hand-made their costumes back then. They are older now but that is an awesome memory!

My favorite adult Halloween costume was from the year I accompanied my husband's band to a campus gig at Kent State University. I wore my "dress greens" uniform from my army days, and it was a bit of a snug fit by then because it was after my son was born. It still fit, even though it accentuated all the curves in a kind of exaggerated way. I got lots of attention as the sexiest officer in the club. What a blast!

I love the old fashion ghost. All you need is a sheet & some scissors to make the eyes and mouth.

i really likes my daughters"dice" costume. we didnt have a ton of money so I took a cardboard box, cut out holes for her arms, head and legs and painted the box white with black dots for the spots on a die. She got more positive comment on that outfit that it made it even more special.
