Doting on Dolls

Playing with baby dolls is not just for children anymore.  Thousands of women are taking home lifelike newborn baby dolls and calling them their own.  The dolls, called “reborns”, are meticulously designed by artists to look and feel just like a real newborn baby and can sell for over $1,000.

Many of the women who buy the dolls could not have children of their own or have grown children out of the house and miss having a baby around.  The “reborns” are often taken for walks in strollers, clothed in real baby clothes, and doted over as if they were the real thing

A recent ABC News article reported on the baby doll phenomenon from a convention for reborn fans in Illinois.  ABC spoke with Lachelle Moore, who has both children and grandchildren of her own, about her love of reborns.  Moore said, “What’s so wonderful about reborns is that they’re forever babies.  They don’t give you any trouble.  There’s no college tuition, no dirty diapers...just the good part of motherhood.”  Moore added a $1,400 reborn to her collection of 36 dolls during the convention.

Women at the convention often referred to holding the dolls as providing “cuddle therapy” and there may be some truth to the phrase.  Studies have proven that women experience a chemical emotional rush when holding a newborn babySue Varma, a psychiatrist from the NYU School of Medicine, said “I would not be surprised to learn that if a women is holding a fake baby, that she would have the same chemical, hormonal reactions as if she was holding a real baby.”

It is not surprising that some people might find the idea of collecting these pricey fake newborns to be a little odd and possibly unhealthy.  Linda Moore describes it as a hobby she has chosen that does no harm to anyone.

What do you think of the recent report about women collecting these fake babies?

Do you think this is just a harmless hobby that helps fill a void in some women?

CaseyDeuce says: January 22, 2009 04:01 PM $1000 is wayyyy too much for me to spend on a doll and I couldnt see myself playing with dolls at an older age like this. I havent heard about this before now! This is just one of MANY examples why most of you are either ignorant or just going along with the crowd. Just because such and such amount is way too much for one person , it does not mean its "way too much" for some one else. So not everyone is "into " doll collecting. There are SO many other things people collect and dress up for the occasion. Miniature doll houses, train sets,etc..etc.. all can be dressed up for a certain holiday or event. Just like you change your door mats or flags,or house decor . If its christmas ,of course the doll collector is gongi to DISPLAY their doll wearing that new outfit. Doesn't make him/her looney. MOST people who buy reborns will display them in their house somewhere to have ART to look at ! ..

This is weird. Motherhood is not creepy because I am holding my living, breathing child. Nurturing a human who will grow up to nurture other humans. This is creepy. These women are obviously missing something in their own lives that they feel they need to replace it with a plastic interpretation of an actual child. I do not need a doll to help me remember "long days past". I have memories and photos. As for men and their matchbox cars, they are not laying in the driveway have races with the other adult men in the neighborhood. A psych eval would be a great recommendation for these women. I equate this to the guy down the street who has a blow-up doll to keep him company.

In my opinion owning, holding, and rocking one of these babies is not detrimental but therapeutic or at least reminiscent of days of old. What is wrong with that??? I spend money on what makes me happy why should Doll lovers be any different? Motherhood is not creepy and to many reborn owners this is there only chance to have a baby of their own. I feel privileged to give someone a little piece of happiness in this world today. We should all enjoy life as much as possible even if it means Rocking your very realistic looking doll as you sit and remember long past days. This is my invitation for you to consider other possibilities than all of these women being creepy insane baby nappers... Thank You

Next, many of these dolls are worth well over $1000.00 It takes an incredible amount of time, energy, and up front resources to create these "babies". Hand rooting the hair alone takes upwards of 6 straight hours. Each baby is painted on multiple layers and then heat set between each layer. Even when the baby is painted, rooted, weighted, stuffed, and glossed there is still the mounting task of creating the ad. So worth the money YES! Just as a side note most reborns sell between $200.00 - 600.00. Now I do not know about every single person who buys a reborn but I can say that the majority of my customers are elderly. These dolls are not toys and should not be given to children. They are for adults collectors!!! Many men collect, play with, and display matchbox cars and I never hear how creepy that is...CONT. AGAIN

SORRY but I can only post 1000 characters on each post so this will be cont. on the next post!!! Hello, I joined this site just to try to give a little insight into reborn dolls... First off I am a reborn doll artist! This profession just sort of fell in my lap as I needed a home based job so I could stay at home with my now 2 yr. old heart baby. OK now to correct some of the thing that have been said in previous posts. I am the proud Mommy of two preemie princesses born at two different hospitals. They do not allow strangers to go into the nicu and hold the preemies. It doesn't matter if the parents are around or not. So this is not a valid idea for these individuals.

Odd, just odd that a grown woman would have/hold/treat a doll as a human being. Sure it may look like a baby but there is no warmth. If you miss holding a baby so much I am sure there are many places where you could volunteer and get your fix of holding an infant. I have seen senior citizens in longtime care facilities that have dolls but these are women who have alzheimers or dementia and have regressed and it is a comfort for them. There dolls don't cost a thousand dollars. Again----if you have that kind of money to spend----donate you money and your time somewhere that you could help with children---a daycare, hospital, etc.

Who is taking advantage of these people! The company should be ashamed of themselves for charging sooo much money for a DOLL! I never heard of this until now, I do have a friend who could not have a baby and she does collect dolls.....I will have to ask her about this?

The way I look at it is, hey... if they've got the money to spend on these dolls and that's what makes them happy, well then good for them.

This is a weird topic because these women are one slice short of a loaf!! These are the type of women that suddenly go bonkers and either steal someone's child or kill and then still the child. That's like keeping your freeze dried pet next to you!! What happened to our nation!!

wow, please, spend the money on those who need it and volunteer at a hospital, or get foster babies to have, hold and love for the month's while they are up for adoption, or get a small dog, or something. That is just a bit too much pretending for me. :)

I have children of my own. I cannot fathom not having children in my life. But I know there are women out there who cannot have children for whatever reason. I dont know what I would do if I wanted a child of my own so very badly but, again, for whatever reason I was unable. I think I would be extremely sad and distraught. But I do not think I would ever have a doll and treat it just as I would treat a real baby. Maybe I would adopt a child, or heck, even a pet. I just dont think it is healthy to play "pretend" like this as an adult. I think the dolls look amazing! And if I had thousands of dollars to spare, I might even collect them myself. But I think anyone who 'plays' with an inanimate object as if it were a living thing has some serious mental issues that need to be dealt with.

These have been around for quite some time now. I think that people who are making them and selling them(for $1,000) could possibly be taking advantage of people who may need some mental help. These people should cope with not having children in healthier ways, IMO. I have seen these babies up close and they truly give me shivers. Very real looking.

I don't understand it either. It is just weird. I have to agree with all the animal comments. If you are that desperate for something to love, why not an animal from the shelter? It's just plain creepy.

I saw the story on TV also and definitely don't get it. I agree with the others that say there are so many animals out there waiting to be adopted, why not adopt one that will actually keep you company. Creepy....
