I always send my daughter with her own lunches. Our public school's lunches are just plain 'nasty' and I don't like to say that because I know some of the nice ladies who work at the cafeteria in the school. They have no input though in what they are forced to prepare the children. The food pyramid is not healthy, in my opinion. They have too many items with added sugar, dyes, etc. Even the carton of plain milk, if you check the ingredients on the school's carton, lists sugar that is added! I send my daughter with water to drink, which she prefers during the day. I've noticed in our local supermarkets it is tough to find milk without sugar listed in the ingredients, but there are a few good brands out there!

My daughter usually brings something to eat with her to school. The cafeteria is too hectic (the school has 2,500+ students) and it's hard for her to order a meal and eat it within the allotted time, thus the need to bring her own lunch.

Not only is it unhealthy, they vary between using their reusable trays and styrofoam trays which take decades to biodegrade. I pack my kids lunch, it may be a pain, but I know she is getting a good, healthy lunch and eco-friendly to boot!

Most of the times the kids have boxed lunches with juice and/ or milk.

The lunches at my daughter's school are pretty nutritious -- they always have a salad bar/soup/sandwich choice and a hot meal choice. With the new nutritional standards, though, some kids just don't get enough food. I already had to stop my first grader from buying extra servings because it was depleting her lunch money account too fast; by the time she's a larger -- hungrier, growing even more quickly -- sixth grader, I don't think the school lunch will be enough for her.

They have a nice selection and my child can choose what she eats. She prefers a hot lunch that they serve rather than a packed sandwich from home.

The school meals are surprisingly healthy and pretty tasty. They send home monthly cafeteria menus and I have got to eat at the school on 2 occasions and was served what the kids had. It was a far cry from what they had when I was a little girl.

My son's scool tries to make lunches healthy but I'm not sure how well they actually do. They could probably work on taste as well. Sometimes my son takes a lunch, which I kind of prefer because I know he will eat it but sometimes he likes to get lunch from there but I'm not sure if he eats much of it.

They are offering all the food groups but they are very boring choices for children.

My sons school lunches are pretty boring and I think they are unhealthy. Hot dogs, chicken nuggets, meatball subs and chicken legs! I always worry about chocking and giving chicken legs to elementary school children really worries me along with the hot dogs.
