    I sure get complaints from others about it though. It is considered rude by some when it is more of an involuntary reflex. Some people have the archaic thinking that it causes arthritis when there is no actual proof that it helps or hinders. Although, it is akin to going to a chiropractor to have spine manipulation. Once you start, it hurts to stop. At least for me it does.

    Thank you for shedding some light on the subject! My son has started doing it (he's 13), and I keep telling him to stop, that it will cause his knuckles to enlarge. I don't know why he does it, but I appreciate you sharing the medical side of it. I never thought there was one!

    You're very welcome! I am not a doctor or nurse, but do love to read medical information and weigh the sources. If it bugs you, you could just let him know that it's a habit that is almost literally a pain to stop later. If he could stop now, it may be better off for him. Also, some people view that as a sign of aggression or aggravation and it could possibly cause social issues.
