I am a mom of 2 in Oklahoma. We just started our first year of Homeschooling this year and I would love to hear from some other Homeschool moms! We are doing a completely by interest school year. By that I mean, if he asks a question we did deep to find the answer. We have talked about tigers and the weather and history. It is amazing what his little mind will soak up at such a young age. What types of things are your kids learning? Any suggestions for us ladies just starting out?

pearlsmommy1999, not having transportation is really hard. We have to travel about 45 min to get to our group activities and there are plenty of times that we just can't go due to gas prices. We have kids from the group come up to our house though and spend hours playing. Maybe you could try to make it to one group event and let her meet some of the kids and see if something like that might be possible. You would be surprised how accomidating HS moms can be:-) I would also add that while I agree she needs friends close to her age, I have seen some amazing things come out of friendships with kids older and younger than mine.

I was home schooled from fourth grade on. I have one who has a late birthday, I love that we can work when we want to, and at her own pace. we are in a small co-op that meets once a year, and it is getting a lot better. I am fortunate that we have friends who home school as well. I didn't know she was planning on homeschooling when I meet her. I am still surprised at some of the comments (mostly older people) give me when I talk about homeschooling. A cousin still rags my kids about homeschooling. soon I am going to have to put a stop to it. My kids don't need that. WE also research a lot of things on a spur of the moment, but you are going to have to more than likely test at the end of the year, or portfolio something to show your work. different states vary on this. I also recommend joining a support group if you haven;t already. there are tons of resources out there, even a legal group for support.

Nice to hear from others on this topic! I am considering homeschooling my daughter. We are going to start homeschool preschool later this year when she turns 2. Just simple stuff like letters and numbers. I love homeschool blogs - will definitely check those out.

Hi There! My name is Victoria-Grace, and I was home schooled halfway through middle school and all through high school. The first thought of homeschooling killed me. I swore I would go to high school. However, I fell in love with homeschooling. I was able to work the way I wanted. when I wanted. I also had more time to expand my knowledge on other subjects I loved, such as art and fashion; work, and play travel volleyball. I graduated high school 2 years early with a GPA of 3.92. I am now attending the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design where I am double majoring in Fashion Design and Marketing. I am also being reviewed to be a Student Ambassador. I currently hold a 4.0 GPA. I feel like homeschooling gave me a huge advantage over the other students. I have a much better work ethic than other students and I am far more mature and professional. Homeschooling was by far the best thing that happened to me. I learned so much more than math and science. I learned about life.

I just started homeschooling my 4 year old twins as well. Even though we have just started I can tell the non-homeschooling replies on here. The only people who worry about socialization are non-homeschoolers. The homeschoolers usually know that they participate in so many activities that it is a non-issue. Besides, people consider socialization to be the current school environment which promotes bullying and violence at school. Not what I want my children to be socialized with. We are doing a mix of programs. We are using Hooked on Phonics for reading and learning as we go for everything else. Reading books together about things that they are interested in, watching the science channel (volcanoes are big right now around here). They love math and science and those are my areas of expertise so it's easy for me to feed them information. We'll see how things go later. One year at a time. Good luck to all the other homeschoolers!

We aren't there yet, as my eldest is only 2y5m old, but we do discuss the possibility of homeschooling for preK-1st grade (I personally taught each of these grades and feel 100% confident in my ability to teach them for home schooling). I love hearing about other families who are succeeding with homeschooling. The Internet definitely makes it a less intimidating prospect--there are so many homeschool blogs out there!!

The more fun we have, the more engaged in learning the kids will be ... because it will be fun for them too.

This is my first year doing home schooling, but its through an online virtual school so its already structured (thank goodness!). On the typical day he does math, history (more like geography), reading, phonics, and science. I love it but wish I felt more at ease because sometimes I feel like he would learn better/more at a physical school. Maybe kids just learn at different paces after all!

I have been homescholling my daughter for 2 years I have taught her to read and write it was a challenge but totally worth it! My four year old has learned along the way! The biggest blessing is to spend time and teach my children..Its gonna be a bumpy but fun ride!
