I am a mom of 2 in Oklahoma. We just started our first year of Homeschooling this year and I would love to hear from some other Homeschool moms! We are doing a completely by interest school year. By that I mean, if he asks a question we did deep to find the answer. We have talked about tigers and the weather and history. It is amazing what his little mind will soak up at such a young age. What types of things are your kids learning? Any suggestions for us ladies just starting out?

I can imagine that this would be difficult, but I am sure it would be doable. I work most days of the week. I use Sunday's to get the week ready with a box for everyday that includes everything my son will need that day. If there is someone they could stay with during the day then they could have busy work for then and then set aside an hour or two in the evenings to teach something new. Or Saturdays. Homeschooling is overwhelming for sure, it is all about organization for me though. I get "school" ready on Sunday and then chore type stuff I try to throw in a few minutes here and there in between during the week. There are plenty of days that I wonder what in the world I was thinking, but I personally can't let my child go to school. The thought of it sends me into panic mode. I just can't entrust their safety or well being to someone that is overwhelmed by a class or school full of other children. I have a hard time with 2 I can't see how they manage with 20 or 30 at a time.

I have been homeschooling for 6 years now. I have 4 kids and am currently teaching my 5 yr old to read. Make sure the kids are involved in some type of out of the home activity. This can fill a number of requirements in your curriculum as well as cultivate their socialization!

I have found just going to church helps my son. Even just the one day a week is better than nothing. We haven't been able to make it to the homeschool groups activities much lately. My son starts T ball again this month and we are thinking of signing him up for piano lessons. Plus he has friends that live down the street. I think the socialzation part just really takes effort. Make a point to set up play dates after regular school hours or on the weekends. I would rather my child learn at home and play after. Just my opinion though.

A word to the wise I have been home schooling my for the past five years. I went a program that provided everything. It was nice. I started when he was in 8Th grade due to health issues. My biggest mistake was when he didn't fell good i didn't push. It has caused a lot of issues .To mean the best thing to do is to never veer from your schedule.

Homeschooling mamas are stretched for time, but this newly published book is a hoot! The Homeschool Experiment, by Charity Hawkins. It's a fiction novel, and while it is hilarious and a ton of fun, it also teaches a lot about homeschooling and being a parent of homeschooled children, especially for those who are relatively new to the whole homeschooling concept. I think it's a great book, and I'll be giving away a copy of it soon on my blog: http://www.JoyInOurJourney.com The socialization issue? Really a non-issue unless you cocoon yourselves into your home and never go hang out with friends anywhere. We don't have an age-appropriate co-op in our area (the co-op has only been around for about 3 years and is too young for my 12- and 14-year-olds now), but we participate in homeschool skating (once a month), homeschool bowling (once a month), field trips, playdates and get-togethers with friends, and sometimes mom meetings at my house. Have fun!

Hi all! I am a SAHM homeschooling my 12 going on 13 y/o daughter. We started last year in the 6th grade. She finished on high honor roll! I am really having problems finding other children her age for her to socialize with. Most of the groups are out of our area, and I do not have transportation for her. Anyone have any ideas?

This year we are using an online curriculum called K12. Next year we may fully homeschool, but for my first year I wanted some structure and some ideas about what I should be teaching my son who is in Kindergarten this year. I like that we have a teacher to help when needed, but I don't like that we are on the schools schedule instead of our own. Although, we've been told to go ahead and take our time, or work ahead - there are still some limits to the program. We use a combo of books, workbooks, and internet. I love having my kids at home with me and I am so happy that I don't have to send them to a traditional brick and mortar school. I find it truly inspiring all the parents who are choosing to homeschool. It is a lot of hard work -but very rewarding.
