I started learning to sew about 6 years ago. I'm 51 years old. It was rough going at first as I had no mentor and no classes. I am much improved and now tailor my clothes to fit! Last year I made drapes and Roman Shades for my bedroom. I did it for less than $200.00. If I had them custom made(my windows are not standard) it would have cost well over$1,200.00. This is pretty serious savings to me. What do you think?

That's great! I learned to sew in school, but I have not sewed for quite a while now. I made my own curtains. It would have cost $425 to do my windows, but nstead I made them for $38. I want to made the Roman shades, but do not know how.

I've started to sew the past year. I love it. It is a great hobby. I make curtains, my neices doll clothes, halloween costumes. Nothing is professional looking though but they do the job! I have found that good will always has excellent fabric from 99 cents to $1.99 no matter what the yardage or quality is. It's amazing what you can find.

I sewed, self-taught, several years ago. After the frustration of my bobbin not working properly got on the last nerve, I gave up and eventually sold my sewing machine. Hubby and I just purchased another and I'm looking forward to getting back in the saddle. He is even going to try his hand at "thread injection," what his manly hammock hanging buddies call sewing. FYI: Hammock hanging is where you sleep between two trees in a hammock, instead of sleeping on the ground in a tent. I was surprised to learn, at a recent hammock hang, that several men made their own tarps and hammocks.

I used to sew all the time when my kids were in school their prom/homecoming dresses, curtians and. I even made costumes for a dance acadamy every year whole classes and individual dancers that paid for my 4 girls to dance. But it has been over 10 years since I have done anything. I am attempting to make some Princess style curtians for my grand kids 4yo twin girls. I already have the fabric (solid plum color) and plan to have a scalloped bottom with tabs at the top, but I want to decorate and I am stumped. They have pastel beadspreads and light purple walls. Any suggestions?

I only know sewing basics but with the internet and youtube I have venture out from sewing repairs into making my own nursing pillow, nursing cover and fleece toddler hats with ear flaps. This basic skill has saved me some money.

I've been sewing for a few yeas now but no huge projects like sewing clothes for myself .Mainly clothes like shirts tanktops and skirts for my daughter . My new hobby though is sewing doll clothes , my husband bought our daughter one last year and the outfits are $20 ouch! it only takes 2 nights and some good sized scrap fabric to make them for free ! I've taken now to sewing them as presents for all the little girls i know . I still work on yo yo dolls from but i have to take huge breaks from them time to time .The sewing machine never worked for me either and it was for the same reason as Groovyduo the bobbin was killing my patience . I haven't gone back to it as she has and oh to Momma George i made similar curtains for my daughter same color too! as extra decoration since she has a fancy nancy themed room i just sewed little pearl beads onto them in random spots that or yo yo's are always a quick cute little thing to add on them.

I THINK THAT IS GREAT. I PLAY WITH THE SEWING MACHINE OCCASIONALLY. WHEN I USE IT THOUGHT MY THREAD GETS STUCK ON THE BOTTOM SIDE. MAKES IT FUSTRATING SO I STOP THEN A FEW MONTHS LATER TRY AGAIN.

I just started learning to sew last Christmas so i could save money by sewing my own curtains and sewing pajamas for my son. If you buy them in the store its at least $7 or more and i can make them for about $2.

I go to garage sales and thrift stores to buy large size dresses, tshirts, sheets ect. They can all be used as materiel to make things for children and your house. Look for clearance fabric shower curtains and sheets, they make great curtains. Just use your imagination. Even the smallest bit of material can be used in strips to make a sundress for a little girl. Pillow case dresses are my favorite and they are so plentiful at thrift stores, just watch out for stains.
