Taking knitting needles on an airplane

Hi, I am a beginner knitter and will be flying across the country this weekend and want to practice knitting. Are you allowed to take plastic knitting needles on the airplane?

I last flew Airtran and you are able to take any knitting needles and crochet hooks on their flights. Not sure about other airlines though.

I have found that the only needles I can guarantee won't be taken from me are bamboo.

I would also recommend getting a round victorian cutter if you think you might need it -- you won't be allowed scissors but the round cutters -- which keep the blade secured under a shield -- are allowed and safe.

Who would have thought this would be an issue! Thanks for the warnings, I haven't flown in a number of years and have upcoming flight, wouldn't have even considered this an issue....but times have changed....

Bamboo are the only ones allowed last time I checked. And they do check -- I flew British Air a while back and they nearly ruined the sock I was making as they checked to make sure they were bamboo. Then of course, they wanted to know HOW IN THE WORLD to do that. :)

Very interesting. Who would have thought it? I must say though that I would be more comfortable without a terrorist having them on the plane.

I have flown Delta and United in the last year and I have taken my circular metal needles no questions. Though, just to be sure, they recommend taking a self addressed envelope with you in case they won't allow, you can mail them home so they're waiting when you get back!

I know this is an old topic but I wanted to reply. I fly at least once a year for some reason or another and I have always brough my crocheting with me on the plane. I always just stick my needle (which are the metal ones) inside my yarn and have that in my bag. I have never gotten questioned or asked to pull it out or have had them taken away.

I've never had a problem taking my metal ones and I've flown with them several times knitting while on the plane.

I have been traveling with knitting, crochet, and needle point right in my carry on for years and have never had a problem
