The Suicide Squad
HBO Max release August 6th
Fans of the DC Universe have been waiting for this stand alone sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad for some time. And lucky for HBO Max subscribers, they can stream the film from the comfort of their couch. The star-studded cast includes Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Sylvester Stallone and John Cena among many others. The Chicago Tribune’s Michael Phillips reviewed the film favorably and enjoyed the humorous elements you don’t often see in DC Universe films. He writes, “In the wildly uneven DC film universe, so often weighed down by its Batman and Superman misfires, that practically qualifies “The Suicide Squad” as a drawing-room comedy.Reader, I enjoyed it.”
Annette
Theater release Aug. 6, Amazon Aug. 20th
If you are a fan of musicals (rock operas more specifically) and avant garde films, this is most definitely a marriage of the two. It focuses on a comedian, played by Adam Driver and his wife (Marion Cotillard) who welcome a most curious baby girl into the family. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw reviewed the film and was enamoured with the strangeness and absolute power house performance from Driver. He writes, “Annette is a forthright and declamatory and crazy spectacle, teetering over the cliff edge of its own nervous breakdown, demanding that we feel its pain, feel its pleasure and take it seriously. I think it isn’t quite as imaginative and complex as Carax’s previous film…” The film will see a limited release in theaters August 6th, but if you don’t want to venture out to the theaters it will be hitting Amazon Prime Videos just a few weeks later on August 20th.
Respect
Theater release Aug. 13th
No one had a voice like Aretha and this film will tell you the story about how this legend grew up and became one of our most revered singers of all time. And who else to step into this soulful singer’s shoes than Jennifer Hudson who brings her own amazing vocals to the screen. Hudson is quoted in Rolling Stone talking about her role as Franklin in the film saying, “Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, we know her as this legend but there is a story to everyone. Her life had so much depth to it, and it came through the music.” To see this incredible story play out you will have to visit theaters on August 13th or wait for a streaming date.
The Card Counter
Theater release Sept. 10th
From director Paul Schrader and Martin Scorcese (serving as executive producer) comes this revenge thriller about a gambler starring Oscar Isaac. The supporting cast includes Tiffany Haddish, Willem Defoe and Tye Sheridan. Isaac, plays a gambler that is haunted by his past as an ex-military interrogator and meets a woman played by Haddish who is more than happy to make use of his card-counting abilities. But there is much more to the story then a game of poker. Brian Welk from The Wrap says, “Just like Schrader’s ‘First Reformed’ before it, ‘The Card Counter’ is hardly just about a gambler, as it grapples with more existential themes in sometimes surreal ways.”
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Theater release Sept. 17th
If you know the story of Jim and Tammy Faye Baker, TV evangelist icons of the 70’s and 80’s that famously conned their followers and fans, then you know that there will be a lot of drama in this story. Tammy Faye, played by none other than Jessica Chastain, gives a three dimensional look at the rise, fall and later redemption surrounding the woman and televangelist. Chastain recently told People about her role as Tammy Faye in the film saying, “I just was so blown away by her and her story. The thing I loved the most about Tammy is her capacity to love. She knew what it felt like to not feel important, and she didn't want anyone to experience that.”

The Suicide Squad I would like to see
I want to watch all of these movies. I really think The Eyes of Tammy Faye looks interesting. I think that Annette seems like it would be awesome. What could be cooler than a musical "rock opera". I also think that Respect will be great. You can't go wrong with Aretha Franklin. You just know the story of her life has to be exciting.
I am looking forward to see the movie Respect. I'm a big fan of Jennifer Hudson.
