Women Face The Facts About Facebook

If you find yourself updating your Facebook status and checking to see what your Facebook friends are up to at all hours of the day and night you are not alone.  A new survey conducted by Lightspeed Research for Oxygen Media shows that women between the ages of 18 and 34 are some of the biggest Facebook addicts around.

A recent article from AFP discusses the results of the latest survey and how some of the findings may surprise you..  According to the survey, 34 percent of women in this age group who use FB say they check the website first thing in the morning when they wake up before brushing their teeth or washing their face.  Twenty percent of female Facebook users admit to sneaking a peak at the site in the middle of the night.

Since the advent of social networking sites some have questioned how they affect the way we connect with people on a daily basis and question whether we are doing too much of our socializing in a “virtual” world.  This survey reports that a whopping 57 percent of women ages 18 to 34 talk to people online more than they do face to face and 31 percent say they are more confident about their “online persona” than their real life one.

There are a few interesting and possibly contradictory findings in the survey as well.  While 63 percent of the women say they use FB as a career networking tool, 42 percent say they have no problem posting photos of themselves visibly intoxicated.

Women and men differ in the way they use FB since men use it as a dating tool far more often than women.  The survey reports that 20 percent of men use the site as a way to “hook up” while only 6 percent of women felt this way.  Twenty-four percent of men admit to using Facebook to break-up with someone while only 9 percent of women have done this.

What do you think of the latest survey about women who use Facebook?

Are you guilty of any of the Facebook behaviours mentioned above?

I have a facebook account, and I do check it a couple times a day. Facebook is a good way for me to keep up with friends who live far away. It's a good place to post pictures, too. I've renewed friendships with people I haven't talked to in decades. And with the privacy settings, I feel I only have to reveal what I feel comfortable with.

It is so addicting... It's half out of boredom .. it is like checking the fridge 3x an hour, when nothing ever changes! I keep checking FB but no new comments or updates L)

After having children, I cut my work hours way down. I find FB a great link to the outside world, and a wonderful way to share pictures of the kids with grandparents and other family that don't live nearby. I do not, however, find it a necessity to friend everyone I have ever met or check it at all hours of the day.

I started on FB because my 17 year old is on it. Then I started trading pictures with a friend and some 100 friends later I now even have it on my phone. I am careful on it though. I only accept friend requests from people I know, not friends of friends. I stay off the aps and I would never post questionable pictures. I also am part of Lifechurch.tv and they use facebook to keep us up to date. In fact I live near Nashville and FB was a lifesaver in mobilizing volunteers and learning where and what was needed to help.

I only use facebook to talk to people I've gone to school with, etc. I only use the site about once or twice a week. I think the women who check it first thing when they wake up probably are desperately searching for something or someone. Sad.

I have a facebook, but I use it to communicate and get in touch. Not for other reasons. Also, I make sure everything I post is something I'd be willing to show/tell my mom.

I have a Facebook and I check it from time to time pretty regularly. However, I don't fall into the age group of the women that were surveyed. I think that it is a very useful and helpful tool to keep in touch. I don't think that it is an addiction to Facebook itself but just a medium for people to keep in touch some what like a cell phone. What's good about this product is that you can meet new people and keep in touch with them long-distance. So with that being said, I don't think that it is the problem, or any addiction. Is just a new way of communicating.

I do go on facebook almost every day, but do not play games like most. I use it to keep up with my old friends and people I haven't seen in ages. I was shot at point blank range the end of last year and I am still healing..I have only been on FB a couple months, but I find it comforting to talk to friends (all of my 85+ friends are real life friends) that I can no longer go visit:)

I have a facebook page. I check it a few times a day. I don't play any of the apps like my friends play though. Just check in and log off.
