Using a pacifier too long can cause speech problems for young children and problems with teeth/lips.

My oldest daughter didn't use a pacifer, my youngest did till she was about 18 months old. We wouldn't let her use it all day, only at certain times. We didn't have any trouble with her giving it up, she really did it on her own. She will be six in a few months. We haven't had any trouble with her teeth, or with her speech. I think that if you choose to use them that its fine as long as you don't let them become "attached" to it, and should really have them off of it by 2-3.
