Is the economy affecting your waistline?

In times of stress, there tend to be two types of eaters: stress eaters--those who reach for comfort foods and eat more when they’re under pressure and stress starvers, those who lose their appetite altogether when times are tough.

For some women, the economic downturn has forced them to tighten their wallets at the supermarket. In these cases, less money can often mean less healthy food choices. For other women, financial stress means less socializing around food, less takeout and less intake in general. In either case, many women are seeing the scale tip one way or the other.

Has your waistline changed as a result of economic challenges? If so, why?

Yes, I've gained weight: less expensive foods tend to be higher in calories. (27.6%)

Yes, I eat more/less when I'm stressed. (31.1%)

Yes, I'm working longer hours and not eating as well. (6.5%)

No, the economy has not affected my routine or my waistline. (34.7%)

I have always found it interesting that the worse a food is for you, the cheaper you can get it. The fresh fruits and veggies are always a higher price. The calorie laden frozen pizza's and boxed meals are cheap and usually on sale. They tell you to eat better and healthier yet charge a premium to do so! Same with organic and natural, always more expensive and rarely on sale.

I spend alot of time dealing with organizations that help the needy i.e foodpantries and shelters, and it really amazes me that there is vitrually nowhere that offers help getting fresh produce or meats. People have a number of places to go to receive canned goods or other non-perishables, but how healthy can it be to eat mac n cheese or condensed soup eveyday? Given the unemployment rate and the number of people reaching out to these facilities you would think someone somewhere would offer some healthy help.

Haven't we had this poll already? I really am tired of talking about the economy.

I have gained weight recently. It would be a cop out to say it is anyone's fault but my own. The economy didn't do it to me. I am in control of my own actions.

I agree with JBallantine. You can always find cheap carb- and calorie-laden food, even almost for free (think about those tasty, fattening 30 cent microwaveable pot pies, for examples). That's what is so twisted about things - we complain about the obesity epidemic, yet no one does anything about it. The fact is, it's affordable to buy a bucket of fried chicken for your family, and it eats up your wallet to make something healthy at home, like grilled chicken breasts and fresh, organic veggies.

Whenever I'm stressed (like right now), I crave sweets and indulge my cravings without hesitation. My current 'cravings' were precipitated by recent layoff.

We are vegetarians to begin with and have always shopped for fruits and veggies on sale and use a lot of coupons when shopping for groceries. Econonmy has not changed our eating habits, but we have certainly cut down on multiple trips in the car, we now carefully plan the route to run our errands. Thanks, A

@emac79 well maybe if you're privileged and unaffected by the economy then sure by all means don't talk about it but not everyone is quite so lucky. We need to bring awareness to the everyday issues that the economy has impacted whether we realize it or not. I'm a full time college student with a recent part time job; fees are going up TWICE next year, I'm already in debt and it's way too expensive for me to buy fresh produce every week at the market. It's easy to opt for the dollar menus at McDonalds and Jack, but it's so unhealthy!
