What if a dog could tell your story from his perspective? That's what Enzo does in this charming novel: he tells the story of his family and what happened to them from his perspective, having learned a lot about life from watching endless hours of daytime television while his owner works. "When a dog is finished living his lifetimes as a dog, his next incarnation will be as a man." And Enzo so wants to be a man in his next life. He is the dog every person would love to have -- empathetic, thoughtful, intelligent, fun-loving, amazingly human, and deeply, deeply attached to his family. Using auto racing as a metaphor for life, Enzo learns from Denny, his car-racing 'owner,' that the car goes where the eyes go: in other words, what you focus your attention on becomes where your life is going. Through death and neglect and grief and great pain, Enzo is there telling us the story about his family and how they managed to get through it all, not unscathed, but all right in the end. And Enzo is all right in the end too -- This is an easy read but you will need tissues. And it is a beautifully sweet read that will make you laugh, bring you to tears, shake your head about how mean-spirited and cruel people can be, and give you faith that if you do the right thing and keep on track, things will be okay.

At first I was hesitant about reading a book from a dogs perspective. As I began to read it about Enzo, I could not put it down. This was an amazing story, I cried, laughed and even was mad, but by far the story brought me into the dogs life and I love the metaphor of racing in the rain as life goes by that the author uses. Truly one of my favorites!
