Many of us get involved in a myriad of ways in our local, school or online communities. How do you choose where and how to get involved?

I'm involved in a dog rescue group. Our group saves Great Pyrenees Dogs, www.greatpyratlanta.com. I'm a stay at home mom and was starting to feel like I was losing touch with myself. I've had Pyrs for several years. I was so excited when the Pyr rescue group came on the scene 2 years ago. I've been with them for over a year and feel great. Placing these gentle giants we rescue from the shelter into loving homes is so rewarding. It gave me back my sense of 'self'. I love being a wife and mother, but started to feel like my 'self' was getting lost. Find what is close to your heart and volunteer, the rewards are endless.

I'm very involved at my church, and also volunteer in a program called feeding families. My daughter loves helping me box up food for families and making the deliveries to their homes. It's very fulfilling!

I'm super involved with the Sierra Club and several other hiking groups. One great way of getting involved is Meetup.com. Most everywhere has a good variety of groups, and if you don't find one you like, start one! Almost every person I've ever meet through Meetup has been great!

I work at a nursing home, and our residents collect and clip manufacturer coupons and send them to families on U.S. military bases overseas. Students from a local college help with the project. This is a fun and easy way for our residents to help support our troops!

I live in a relatively small town so I do know a lot of people who run the local volunteer programs and missions. Facebook has also been an amazing call to arms, from help after natural catastrophes, situations happening that need intervention, fundraising activities, volunteer needs to personal tragedies... there is a group who has an amazing outreach (we are all from different areas, walks of life) and we usually see each other when there is something that needs to be done (we keep joking that we have to meet in happier circumstances, just to hang out and relax but we are usually too busy).

I joined Rotary about a year ago and that has been a wonderful experience. Not only are they constantly working on activities or programs around the community (and abroad), but it also opened doors for me to learn about other volunteer opportunities. We work on projects like cleaning parks, Habitat for Humanity and even created and sponsored a local Special Olympics team. I really enjoy the variety too. There are no shortages of worthy projects and it's nice to hop around and help a little on several different ones.

My daughter is a Special Olympic Athlete and I volunteer with our local group. It is fantastic watching our athletes compete and feel so proud when they are on the podium receiving their ribbon or medals.

We've recently moved to a new area in our state, and I'm now volunteering at the largest outdoor art sculture gardens in the nation! I visited there as a child, and to be a volunteer is just opening up a whole new culture to me! I've so much to learn. Visitors tell me this is why they return to this area and tell their friends and family. Some camp across the way at a state park and enjoy the gardens several times in one week, after all a paid ticket is good for an entire week! To be a part of presenting such a beautiful area in my home state is so much FUN!

I care for some elderly neighbors- take them goodies, invite them over for dinner and donate blood on a regular basis
