Many of us get involved in a myriad of ways in our local, school or online communities. How do you choose where and how to get involved?

I work in a public school. We have seen a decrease in volunteers :(....I imagine because of hectic work schedules and children with over scheduled activities....makes me sad that people are too busy to be involved in things that matter most...Stuies have shown that parents whom are involved with thier childs school, children do much better acdemicley and socially. You would not believe the work I bring home, and Im not the teacher, but an aide! We work together tirelessly to make the most of what time we have. Classes are maxed out, which leaves us very little time to prep. So please if you have an hour or 2....get involved! See if your childs teacher needs you to help a group of children one on one, maybe your parent club could use a hand....every little bit HELPS!

I have been involved with young girls and women by being a mentor and volunteering at a local Boy's and Girl's Club. I have also worked with immigrants on developing skills like resume writting and interviewing. I am currently looking to get involved in empowering women to start businesses in low income communities and third world countries. Does anyone have any suggestions of associations that are involved in this?

I try to stay very involved in my kids' schools. We have a special needs child & we have found that parents who are not involved or very active in participating in their child's education planning (iep's can be overwhelming!) allow the child to sometimes get left behind & lost in the clutter. I am hoping to get more involved in our son's Special Olympic activities as well. He will be going to the summer olympics next June. We are also in the midst of settling both of our boys into cub scout packs as well. We have found a relatively young group here & they need new leaders to step forward.

I am very involved in our community helping struggling families. Five years ago I started a volunteer non-profit organization called The Friendship Tree. It has been the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I work full time and do this in my spare time. This year we have helped over 800 families with clothing, household items, furniture, baby items, Christmas, etc. We started out of our 2 car garage and full basement and 2 years ago moved into a warehouse. It is an email based network of over 890 members who give to help families in our community. I feel every community needs a Friendship Tree. It is amazing what this network has done over the last 5 years. Together we have made a difference! This is another reason I started my blog. After helping families with the material items they need I thought it would be helpful to share ways families could save money to stretch their budget. You can read more about the Friendship Tree - www.friendshiptree.org.

When my children were in school I was a Girl Scout leader and was on the RIF (Reading is Fundamental) Committee. Now that they are in Grad School I crochet blankets for Project Linus and work the cash register for the bingo game that our religious organization runs.

I have been told I have a talent for organizing things so I have organized several fundraisers over the years for sick family and friends and those who have a need. I don't belong to a certain organization it just depends on what happens and who needs help. Some years I have done four or five large fundraisers and other years only one.

I work for a program that assists homeless youth with becoming self sufficient. I am also involved in several volunteer programs that help the homeless in Reno, Nevada. I started a volunteer engagement program at my sons school to create volunteer opportunities for children and get them engaged in volunteering. I also volunteer for several non-profits with my son.

Founded by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2002, After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles (ASAS-LA) is a leading after-school program provider whose programs educate, enlighten and inspire thousands of K-12 students each day. Activities are centered around health, fitness and nutrition; the visual and performing arts; and youth leadership and community service learning. I was just introduced to this program via a Klout event Fundraiser, I am looking foward to joining them in their efforts to continue to have funding for this program. Here is the link, they accept Paypal donations http://www.la-allstars.org/
