I started knitting to learn something new. Now I'm trying to sell some of the items I've knitted (and crocheted) on Etsy. www.tikihutcrafts.etsy.com Just to help ends meet.

I started about seven years ago. I was having surgery and would be home for a few weeks recovering. My mom taught me to cast-on and the knit stitch, but she couldn't remember to purl or cast-off. I made a HUGE garter stitch "scarf;" I just kept going until a friend finally taught me a cast-off. Then I learned to purl, and for several years just did scarves for everyone (including my dogs). Finally, I joined a beginner's class and liked it so much, I immediately went on to advanced. I still knit all the time, and love doing baby blankets and clothes for friends and family. And, to complete the loop (so to speak), I started a knitting meet-up in my community to bring together needle crafters in my area of all experience levels.

I learned to crochet when I was 13. My aunt was pregnant and crocheting a blanket. I thought it was really pretty and wanted to learn. Because I'm left handed she taught me by sitting across from me so I could mirror her movements. Knitting took a little longer. Learned to knit when I was in my late 40's because my sister was learning and I figured if she can do it so can I. Talk about sibling rivalery. lol Still have issues reading patterns but have found that watching videos on YouTube helps when I can't figure things out.

When I was seventeen, unmarried and pregnant (in 1966), I stayed for several months in a home for unwed mothers. As an aside, even though I dreaded going there, I actually had a lot of fun and made some good friends. Anyway, I wanted to leave my child with something to show that I did love him or her. I bought some yellow yarn, ribbon and needles and a rather difficult pattern. I had never knitted before but I stuck with it and finished the set (sweater, cap and bootees) just before I gave birth. The whole set was perfect. Years later, my son found me and during a visit with him and his family, he showed me the set and said that he had been baptized in it and had his oldest son baptized in it. His mother didn't show it to him until he was an adult because she didn't want his siblings--both adopted--to feel bad because their mothers hadn't left them anything. The funny thing is, I was never able to knit anything after that.

One of my hobbies is collecting Barbie dolls, I never had one when I was a little girl. I had to wait until I was grown before I could afford to buy these dolls and I have some beautiful ones in my collection. I also have other dolls as well.

I always adored crochet and knitting pieces but could never fully get the basic concepts since I had no one to teach me. In March I seen Finger Knitting on Pintrest and started making finger knitting crafts. This April, my husband seen I had a huge interest with yarn that he bought me a knitting kit and yarn as my birthday gifts. I knitted for a few months and made a few small projects for my kids, then I started showing interest in crochet, I bought a hook from Wal-Mart and been making crochet items too.

I only know how to knit on the knifty knitter, and I just wanted to make a few scarves. I did, and I desperately would like to know how to actually knit or crochet (especially crochet, since that's what my great Granny Davis did, whom I sadly never got to meet- but still have things of hers I wish I could do). I just can't seem to find anyone in my area that can teach me...
