Limited Choices - 10 Foods or Fewer

Gourmet Magazine recently published an interesting statistic: "one out of five Americans lives on a diet of ten foods or fewer. Among the most common choices? French fries, fried chicken, chocolate chip cookies and Kraft macaroni and cheese."

Ten foods or fewer. Wow. I just don’t think I could do it. Almost every meal I cook involves a recipe that I’ve never tried before. I realize this may make me something of a culinary daredevil, but I was stunned by the thought of such limitation.

I fully embrace the idea of comfort foods - food you’ve liked forever; a recipe you know by heart, something easy to put on the table when you have to have dinner ready in an hour. I have my share of fall-backs tucked into the recesses of my brain, but to cook or eat only those foods week after week would drive me batty.

Still, the idea got me thinking. If I could only have ten foods, what would they be? First, I thought about exotic items, food I save for special occasions like caviar or lobster. If you are going to be limited, at least indulge, right? Then I thought about comfort foods like chili or mashed potatoes and gravy. Who could live without them?

Finally I started a list, basic things that I could rotate through. This is what I’d pick: Steak, Pork Tenderloin, Salmon, Spinach, Arugula, Cheese (am I supposed to pick only one???) potatoes, chocolate, tomatoes and mushrooms. I could stick to this list only if herbs, spices and seasonings (including onions, shallots and garlic) were unlimited.

How about you?  Do you find yourself eating the same ten foods?  If you had to choose just ten, what would they be?

I am also a person who likes to experiment with different recipes so if I had to choose only 10, I would be quite limited. I do know that when my children were small, we would also have two things at the dinner table that they were sure to eat or drink. That way, when I did try different recipes, they would always have something like bread or milk and did not go without.

I love steak, pork and chicken, so there's three. I eat oranges and tangerines like crazy and grapes too, three more. I couldn't live without spaghetti and meatballs and the last three would have to be ice cream, chocolate and strawberry licorice. I am a picky eater, but I eat a lot more than 10 foods.

I guess we do eat the same 10 foods in a month but I rotate them with a variety around them. Hamburger, lettuce, cheese, eggs, tortillas, chicken, potatoes, rice, noodles. If I had all the spices I wanted and would use ( I vote minced onions as a spice but what about butter?) this would be my list. We do try new things on a monthly basis. But we each have our favorites so we tend to indulge our likes constantly.

I'm have to say I'm bad, I wake up to a piece of dark Belgium Chocolate and proceed to eat whatever is in the refrigerator. I go in waves of eating really healthy (clean eating) and juicing then I return to eating everything... all in moderation but I tend to love Asian, spicy ad white rice. Which is all bad unless I'm cooking at home. Water is the biggest pleasure, I just don't drink enough.

I always have cooked ground beef in the fridge. I cook one pound of it with a can of rotel (tomatoes and chilies). I can the use this for nachos, enchiladas or tacos. Other than that, we always have frozen chicken tenders that I can cook with either italian dressing, teriyaki sauce or make chicken fajitas. I also buy prepakaged 4oz steaks we can easliy grill or thin sliced turkey for sandwiches. We love stouffers french bread pizzas. For breakfast yougurt or coffee. For lunch cambells heathy choice soups with chesse its. I either drink water or green tea.

Th e things I eat most every day are...Diet Mountain Dew...Green Tea...Wasa Crackers (for my lunch sandwich) FiberOne breakfast bar...and cauliflower. I do however, eat a variety of low fat meats cooked in many different ways. Mostly low fat low calorie ideas that I come up with on my own. I do not eat pork in any fashion. My latest binge has been fish cooked in parchment paper...old bay seasoning and I top it with fresh diced tomatoes, onions, diced hot peppers, cilantro, and lime juice. Its so delicious! Hmmm having said that..I also cook dinner for my son which is normally a little different than mine. He prefers turkey burgers, salads, soups, etc. Oh yeah, I left out something. I tend to get a McDonalds sugar free vanilla iced coffee everyday also. Guess my diet is not so great, but I do love to cook...I just do more of it if I am having a dinner party...

My 10 would be: potatoes, onions, milk, beef, fish, chicken, pork, cheese, pasta and tomato. This given that spices/herbs were available. I didn't limit beef to a certain cut: it could be a steak, a roast or ground beef. The variables are what make my list work. ;)

Working and juggling time makes it hard to be creative. Need the easy stuff. Any suggestions?

I love to eat and I love to cook....my problem is that I just don't know how to cook things correctly or don't know what to cook.....I just hate recipes that require 20 items that you can't find in a small town grocery store....

the ones I eat are not the ones I should chose. I begin my day with coffe and cookie. Grilled cheese for lunch. Sometimes dinner with diet soda, and ice cream occaionally for snack. I would LOVE salad all the time if someone else makes it! I love fruit and steak on a grill, I love eggs anyway you fix them, and Chicken salad! Still keeping the diet ginger ale.
