Tyra Banks Loses 30 lbs... and Credibility?

As a follow-up to SheSpeak’s recent post about anorexia and other eating disorders we have news about former supermodel Tyra Banks. You may remember the press Tyra Banks received a few months ago when she was featured all over the tabloids and the internet pictured candidly at the beach in a bathing suit with captions reading that she was too fat (among other more rude comments carrying the same message).

This is nothing new. We are all accustomed to reading magazines that criticize celebrities for putting on weight. What was different about this was the way Tyra Banks responded to all the negative press about her weight.

She went on her talk show in the same bathing suit she wore in the photos and sent out the message that she feels comfortable with her body and just because she is not as thin as she was when she was modeling does not mean she is not just as beautiful. She later heroically spoke the now famous words “Kiss my fat ass!” aimed at all the people who criticize women who have put on weight.

Fast forward four months and you will see Tyra Banks on the cover of the May 12th issue of Life & Style magazine in a tiny bikini with the caption “How Tyra Lost 30 lbs!”

Why did Tyra Banks lose the weight? There has been speculation about the network pressuring her to drop pounds, though she has said it was her decision and she just wanted to fit into her old jeans. Of course Tyra Banks can do what she wants with her own body, but being a self-employed spokesperson about body image her message becomes very confusing.

So why did Tyra Banks go on to lose 30 pounds in the four months following this declaration that she was perfectly comfortable with her weight?

What kind of a message does that send out to the young women who found encouragement in her commendable message about body image just a few months ago?

Well, i think everything would have been fine , if she did not go onto another magazine and promote the fact that she lost 30 pounds. It just seems as though she caved into pressure fromt he media, when she looked just fine to begin with.

It's true, she is a hypocrite, but aren't we all? She does have a great responsibility as a role model but, she is not responsible for the upbringing of our children. What has happened to parents these days? Most seem to expect everyone else to raise their children so they can put the blame on them. As parents we are the strongest role models for our children and we need to assume this role. We need to step back and access our lives, without being bias, and only then can we say who is to blame.

I, ALSO THINK IT'S HYPOCRITICAL OF HER TO SAY HOW COMFORTABLE SHE IS WITH HER BODY THEN TURN AROUND AND LOSE 30 LBS. I COULD SEE 5 OR 10 OR EVEN 15, BUT A WHOLE 30!. RIGHT THERE SHOWS YOU THAT SHE WAS NOT AT ALL COMFORTABLE. HER INFLUENCE ON PEOPLE TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH THEMSELVES AND TO LOVE WHO THEY ARE HAS LEFT THOSE THAT TRUSTED THAT THERE WAS SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT FEELS AND UNDERSTANDS WHAT THEY FEEL, IN A FALSEHOOD OF REALITY. DO YOU THINK THEY WOULD BE AS POSITIVE OR TRUSTING THE NEXT TIME SOMEONE SAYS THEY'RE ON THIER SIDE OR THAT THEY UNDERSTAND. I THINK NOT!

I say way to go Tyra on the comment. But...then you drop all that weight. Okay, fine people sometimes get overweight maybe because of personal issues and then become stronger to work hard and get back to your thinner self. But this makes her look like a hypocrite. She was all accepting of herself and anyone else overweight when she had a few extra pounds, so now how does she feel or think? Same way ??? I doubt it.

First of all.... She can do whatever she wants with her body. I am 30 lbs heavier than I was before I had children and I think I am still beautiful. I "like" the womanly curves I have now (I think they are sexy) but.... I loved the flat tummy and tiny waist I had before (that was better than sexy... it was hot).

So, if I lose weight now... I guess people will call me a hypocrite too. Well, they can "kiss my soon to be skinny ass" because I am doing what makes me feel good. And Tyra is doing what makes her feel her best.

I thought MBenita said it very well. I don't think I could say it any better.

As someone said, "So what?!"

Do we know that it was for health reasons (hello, publications do fabricate! Just because they're not sued doesn't mean the truth isn't stretched). Maybe she's tryign to fit into a special outfit (anyone ever try to lose weight to get into their wedding dress or New Year's Eve dress?).

Maybe it's just she looked at herself and didn't like what she saw (um, none of us are perfect and everyone says something even if they really don't mean it deep down).

Tyra, like her or not, is a woman who has issues just like everyone else.

I don't so much pay attention to the habits of models because I find them to be pretty annoying for the most part and could really care less about their lives. I have enough going on, I don't need to concern myself with her. Aside from that, who else would love to know the height and weight of the people complaining about how "fat" Tyra is in her swimsuit? How 'bout some photos of them? I bet that would shut them up.

How is promoting a positive body image at any size hypocrisy? She gained some weight and refused to allow people to make her feel bad about it. Then she found her clothes didn't fit and lost weight. Again, she is comfortable with her body at this size.

I can sympathize with her. I take steroids all during the pollen season and my weight swings dramatically. People criticize when I get too fat, and again when I lose weight. So what? The only opinion that truly matters is one's own positive self image.

well there is nothing to get a girl to diet like someone telling her that she is fat . tyra might of thought she was fine until the media mention her weight

I think Tyra is so annoying. I knew she was lying to herself and everyone else when she said she was comfortable with her weight. When people gain weight they get very defensive when a negative is put upon it, that is why she lashed out. When she lost 30 pounds, didn't she think we would remember her ramblings a few months back. She said at the time what benefited her!

This and every tabloid story out there is evidence that you should not model yourself or your life after anyone, especially not the individuals in showbiz! We are not suppose to worship "earthly gods/idols" so it really doesn't matter how much Tyra Banks weighs or what she looks like or what she wears or says. If you have issues with weight then you need to talk with your doctor or someone in the health services community in order to get help and positive advice about your situation.
