When I first walked in to my son’s elementary school library, I expected to see shelves of books and a chart about the Dewey Decimal System. What I found was so much more. I saw Kindergartners testing speed with pulleys and ramps, 3rd graders writing code and 5th graders building simple machines. In a school of 500 racially and economically diverse kids, I saw children being inspired through creative uses of technology and hands-on learning.

What teacher has inspired you or a child you know? Tell us below and you can win two $50 Amazon gift cards: one for a teacher of your choice and one for you to keep!

Though budgets have been cut and school librarians have been fired, I am thankful to librarian Mrs. Latimer for going above and beyond to engage these kids with an active place of learning and exploration.

We know that Mrs. Latimer is just one of the many amazing teachers out there. There are English teachers who foster love of reading, math teachers who make word problems understandable and science teachers who explain the wonders of the world. So many teachers who show children that their life's possibilities are endless.

We wish we could thank them all.

This Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6), please join us in showing our teachers how wonderful they are. Nominate your favorite teacher and tell us why he or she has inspired you or a child you know. One lucky winner will receive a $50 Amazon gift card for a teacher of their choice and another $50 Amazon gift card to keep.

There are two ways to enter:

Simply comment below to tell us the name of your favorite teacher and why he or she is so amazing.

AND/OR:

Tweet about the giveaway: Make sure to include the name of a teacher who inspired you or someone you know!

Click here to Tweet: "Thx to my fave teacher: Ms./Mr.____ on #TeacherAppreciationDay! Entering the @SheSpeaksUp giveaway! bit.ly/1SXAmnL"

*One lucky commenter or Tweeter will be chosen at random to receive a $50 Amazon gift card. SheSpeaks will also send a $50 Amazon gift card to a teacher of the winner's choice. Winner must provide an email address or mailing address for the teacher so that SheSpeaks can send the gift card directly to him or her. Giveaway is open through May 8th, 2016 to U.S. residents at least 18 years of age. Entrants must be a member of SheSpeaks. If you are not a member, click here to join. Winner will be notified by email.

Update: The winners are SheSpeaks member christinlilly and her favorite teacher Mrs. Tomlinson! Thanks to all for entering and congrats to them!

My second grade, teacher, Mrs. J, long ago took the time to point out to me something that I was particularly good at and encourage me to pursue it. It might have taken me a while to pursue her advice, but I've never forgotten it.

Mrs. Whitworth has been my son's Sunday school teacher for the past several years. She has so much genuine love for the kids in her class, they actually look forward to going to class! The fact that she VOLUNTEERS her time each week to teach them about their faith is just one of the reasons I think she is an amazing person.

Well, It's been over 20 years since public school, yet..I still remember my 3rd grade Teacher Ms.Green from PS 155 was a treasure, she always inspired me to be the best I can be even when I didn't pass an exam, she didn't mind if you asked a lot of questions, in fact she even had a reward system for everyone, no matter what score you received on your test which is very RARE today, her compassion and passion for Teaching her students will always have a special place in my heart!

Teacher Christina Quinonez, she's so amazing because at the start of her class, my son had minimal speech and a lot of babbling at age 3 1/2, now he's 4, about to be 5 in a month and he can talk your ear off, quite clearly by the way! She is so involved in making learning, FUN! and she is always very involved in the IEP meetings!

Since my daughter is in an accelerated math, she's had the same teacher since 8th grade. I think he is overlooked often for his teaching but let me tell you why he sticks out. He is the only teacher that I have seen consistently over the past 3 years in high school at ANY school function, no matter how small. He cares!

My sister Dawn Paglini has been a teacher for most of her adult life. She works with special needs children. She is a single mom who works part time at 2 different schools and takes online college courses to increase her credentials. I would love to bless her with an Amazon GC!

Mrs. Martinez is my daughter's teacher. My child started the year off having a rough time with school. She didn't give up on my daughter, and now she is in the honor roll!!!!! My daughter loves school again.

My daughter's teacher does so much for her senior class. Her name is Ms. Hess. She helps the kids organize all their events like Prom, Senior Days, field trips. She goes above and beyond for what she probably gets paid. She makes senior year memorable for everyone. My son had her last year also and she did the same for them. She's an inspiration to my daughter and her entire class.

My favorite teacher, Mrs. Phillips was my first grade teacher. I remember clearly having her as a teacher and can not recall any other teachers, even high school. I remember she taught me how to add and subtract by using paper clips. I was so nervous to ask for help, but she made me feel comfortable coming to her desk to get the help I needed.
