Celebrate #TeacherAppreciationDay By Winning a @SheSpeaksUp Giveaway for You & A Favorite Teacher!

When I first walked in to my son’s elementary school library, I expected to see shelves of books and a chart about the Dewey Decimal System. What I found was so much more. I saw Kindergartners testing speed with pulleys and ramps, 3rd graders writing code and 5th graders building simple machines. In a school of 500 racially and economically diverse kids, I saw children being inspired through creative uses of technology and hands-on learning.

What teacher has inspired you or a child you know? Tell us below and you can win two $50 Amazon gift cards: one for a teacher of your choice and one for you to keep!

Though budgets have been cut and school librarians have been fired, I am thankful to librarian Mrs. Latimer for going above and beyond to engage these kids with an active place of learning and exploration.

We know that Mrs. Latimer is just one of the many amazing teachers out there. There are English teachers who foster love of reading, math teachers who make word problems understandable and science teachers who explain the wonders of the world. So many teachers who show children that their life's possibilities are endless.

We wish we could thank them all.

This Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6), please join us in showing our teachers how wonderful they are. Nominate your favorite teacher and tell us why he or she has inspired you or a child you know. One lucky winner will receive a $50 Amazon gift card for a teacher of their choice and another $50 Amazon gift card to keep.

My daughter's current teacher is great. She's had her for two years and every time I see her teacher she has a great big smile on her face. She's so energetic, positive, and understanding. I really do think she's a wonderful teacher.

My daughter, Lacey Alston, is the most amazing teacher I know. She began her first full year of teaching at a new school in a new town last fall. She teaches 3rd grade Special Ed. What makes her so special is her dedication despite daunting circumstances. My daughter has been suffering from a mysterious illness since Janaury. She daily endures severe abdominal pain and/or nausea, lack of appetite, vomiting and fatigue. She has endured tests and hospitalizations with no answers and has since continued to teach full time, even during a couple of weeks with a nasogastric feeding tube! She has lost 17 pounds during this time, now below 100 pounds, and still goes to work, loving her students and her "dream job". She is the picture of perseverance despite challenges and a great example for her students who have challenges of their own. She is my hero.

I have to share about my son's drama teacher, Mrs. Lane. The students just had their end-of-year performances (in improvisation and one-day play classes). I was just astounded at all the kids had learned. How to be given an object or scenario and create a scene on the spot. How to "show" a story, not just tell one. How these kids could walk onto the stage and BE anyone...without fear! I will always treasure the memories of these shows. In the one-act performance, the last three skits had me holding back sobs. Thank you, Mrs. Lane, for all you did for these kiddos!

I'VE HAD SO MANY GREAT TEACHERS THROUGHOUT MY EDUCATION FROM KINDERGARTEN TO GRADUATE SCHOOL. MISS LOZITO WAS AMAZING AS WAS PROFESSOR SMITH. BOTH EXHIBITED PATIENCE AND KINDNESS AND A LOVE OF TEACHING.
