What Changes Does McDonald's Need to Make?

The struggling fast-food giant's sales have fallen recently and their new CEO, Steve Easterbrook, unveiled a turnaround plan on Monday morning. And he did not mince words when discussing the company's problems.

Recognizing that recent performance was "poor" and that "the numbers don't lie" - some of the challenges he faces are:

  • Tough competition from growing burger chains like Shake Shack, Five Guys and Smashburger (consumers feel that burgers from other chains taste better and are made from higher quality ingredients even though they cost more)
  • Consumers are also embracing "fast casual food" dining from Chipotle and Panera
  • There is increased competition from a full blown breakfast war, notably from Taco Bell, and the McMuffin is under fire

But what Easterbrook really wants to change is the quality of the food and the stale brand image. He stressed that they need to innovate more. What do you think?

I don't know what they have done to their meat, but it is nothing like it used to be. The patties are smaller, even on the quarter pounder which should be a certain size, they do not have the good taste/texture of long ago, and they are so so so salty! Add to that the sloppiness of putting sandwiches together (cheese half off the bun and melted onto the wrapper, a glob of onions on one side only), and the food is not appetizing or satisfying. We can get a much bigger and better meal at a sit-down mom & pop place for the same price. So why would we go to McDonald's? They need to give us some good reasons to come back.

I think a focus on customer service would make a world of difference for McDonald's. Part of the reason Chick-Fil-A is so successful because they have incredible customer service. My issue with McDonald's is poor customer service and lukewarm food. Every time I order from them, the order is missing items, or the food is lukewarm. Also, I think they should also go back to the fry recipe from the 90s because when I was a kid their fries were irresistible, now they are sub-par.

I'd love it if they'll make a smoothie shake, just like chocolate shake, using the fresh fruit. They should start something small using "real" and "fresh" ingredients. I'd really want them to survive.

In this day and time, we all need to get back to the idea that "the customer is always right" ...working more closely with customers on what they want, when they want it and how they want it may sound like the direction & slogan of other chains but McDonald's needs to get to that place to get and keep customers happy and coming back!

Start caring about their customers. It's as simple as that. That one act will bleed into every aspect of the company if they apply it. The food quality will be better, the service will be better, the wages will be fair, the restaurants will be clean and well kept, ect.. People can tell when a company values them and not just their money.

I love McDonalds. You don't go here for a healthy meal. I'm not sure if they could compete in that market. Their salads are known to have about the same calories as their hamburgers.

I'm thinking purely on appearance, give McDonald's a face lift, I've seen what Wendy's has done around town and it actually has drawn me in, love how they even have a fireplace and new interior design. A fresh look and possibly and new innovative playground area can bring more interested parties in!

I love McDonalds but should be able to pick either fries or an salad. Also if you dont want pop you should not have to pay for it in your value meal.

McDonalds should continue offering $1 menu items including their McChicken Burgers which appeals to a lot of Asian communities. They should start offering spiced tea as one of their beverage options (just as Panera does). They could expand their bread-types to include other varieties such as flat-bread, italian, french bread etc. I am sure these small things will start boosting their business. McDonalds has always been a reputable company and people will continue to make use of their services and maybe go to them more often with just some minor additions/choices to their menu items. I wish them all the best.

I would like to see the meals a little healthier, though I really like seeing the calories listed so I know exactly what is what. I appreciate the lower calorie options and hope they continue those.

This is a tricky question. When my family and I eat at McDonald's, it's for two reasons. (A) we have less income to spend on dinner, and (B) we are craving those fatty foods to a certain extent. I enjoy the fact that I can get a salad there if that's what I'm in the mood for, but I also enjoy a McDouble every now and again. I definitely feel upping the quality of the burger section would be a good start. We don't eat at Burger King but I'll tell you what, i am sure their burgers are of better quality and flame broiled, which I love. Even to take steps to use a better frying oil would speak volumes.

I think you should provide better quality ingredients and at a comparable price.

There's nothing like a good old fashioned McDonalds burger but with all the health concerns and bad rap their food gets and do tend to avoid eating it. I think some healthier options with the same convenience factor would be great.
