Has The Time Come To Discontinue The Miss America Pageant?

"There She Is" ... but what for?

Is The Miss America Pageant just another reality TV competition as profound as an episode of The Bachelorette? Is it a charming but harmless nod to a piece of Americana, or a harmful and patronizing objectification of women?

Is it hard to understand, at a time when women outnumber men in universities, and the average woman is a size 14 – why bikini-clad stick figures are strutting around on stages to get scholarship money? Or is there a real-world link to success that contestants gain by competing in this arena?

Hardly anyone would categorize today’s Miss America contestants as unintelligent, inarticulate, apolitical, or detached. Most have attended prestigious universities, earned professional degrees, have exceptional communication skills, maintain a healthy lifestyle and are involved in their communities. What’s not to like about that? And aren’t impressionable teens who have seen the latest Music Awards Shows or celebrity selfies - likely to be unfazed by the pageant’s swimsuit competition?

As a cultural institution, the Miss America Pageant has come a long way since its 1920’s beginnings as a tourist attraction in Atlantic City. Its historical influence in defining our perception of beauty has been prodded along by 3 memorable Miss New Yorks – namely, Bess Myerson, the first Jewish Miss America in 1945, Vanessa Williams, the first African-American Miss America in 1984, and 30 years later to the day, Nina Davuluri, the first Miss America of Indian heritage. The manner in which each of these women rose above the backlash that followed their historic wins, is perhaps the most effective silencer of pageant critics to date.

But is that really enough to justify continuance?

Should new categories of scored competition such as Problem-Solving, Creativity, Diplomacy, Athleticism or Technology – be added to things like Swimsuit, Talent and Social Platform in order to crown a more relevant ideal? Why do we need a Miss America?

We'd love to hear your opinion - Should the Miss America Pageant be continued or discontinued?

Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below and you’ll be entered to win a $75 Visa Gift Card.*

The pageant proves nothing, and is a complete waste of time. Very sexist with gowns that are very revealing. The question and answer round has proved to be very embarrassing. It is time to move on.

I don't go out of my way to watch the pagents, but I would never want to tell the contestants that they would no longer be allowed to compete by getting rid of Miss America Pagents. I am also sick of one group of people telling others what they can and can not do. I would also guess that many of the women who would want to get rid of the pagents are just jealous of the beautiful women. I just wish women would support other women more, even if their choices are not something one would choose for themselves. There are male pagents, body builder contests that the men wear tiny micro undies. Why is there no controversy over this? Seriously... people need to get over themselves and try to support and encourage one another more.

I find it hard to take the essay seriously when the contestants are called "stick figures." Putting the writer's clear bias aside, I'm not opposed to the pageant per se. It doesn't and shouldn't have the kind of importance to offend women who are uninterested in pageants (I have crowns in two nontraditional pageants, myself, and I never had to wear a swimsuit). The contestants are generally very accomplished. I would probably drop the swimsuit competition in favor of an obstacle course, but Americans love a good competition, so I say, as long as there is interest and revenue, it's fine. I'm disgusted by the Nathan's hot dog eating contest, but I'd never demand it be shut down because I think it's gross.

Things that encourage girls to be confident and become well-spoken and offer scholarships should not be ditched. Might it be time to add some new categories? Yes, possibly. But should we be saying pageants are wrong when those same people are buying their pre-teens thongs? Seems like it's a double standard. Keep it.

No matter how I feel about it, that's a non-issue. I'm not entering. If a woman wishes to enter, that's her business. If a person objects to such contests, don't watch. If you don't want your child to be influenced by the contest, don't let them watch, but for goodness sakes, don't take away a grown woman's right to chose. If you are so anti-pageant, just don't watch!

I'm ok with it. I don't love it for me, but if other women want to participate I don't see anything wrong with it.

I think it is time out for this sort of thing. Women don't need anything else where they are no more than pretty objects. The women may represent their state but not what real women are like.

I think it can be entertaining. Personally I only check the show periodically to see how my state is doing, where years ago, I watched it all the way through. Maybe I outgrew it. The show doesn't hurt anything and if people enjoy watching it, then why not leave it on. It may be more interesting if they added some more challenging competitions. The shows we really don't need are the Miss USA franchises. It seems to be a low class imitation of the real thing.
