Is Your Meat "Pink Slime" Free?

“Pink slime” may sound more like something from science-fiction, but if you’re keeping up with the headlines you know the term is in reference to what’s found in a lot of the ground meat we are consuming today. Since pink slime (the left-over trimmings from the cow that butchers usually toss out) is so cheap, fast food joints, grocery stores, and school lunch programs have been using it for a while and the government claims it is safe to eat. But others disagree and want the slimy stuff off the market.

A recent report from NPR’s All Things Considered discusses the movement to take the so-called “lean, finely textured meat” off the menu. Thousands of people are stepping up to sign a petition urging the government to stop endorsing pink slime.

What’s so bad about the pink stuff? About a year ago food revolutionist Jamie Oliver offered a very informative segment on why we should steer clear of the pink slime.

And investigative reporter, Michael Moss, warns that since pink slime comes into contact with the cow’s hide it is in greater danger of contamination from forms of E. coli.  Since there is no way of telling if your ground meat contains the pink slime, you can be sure of a cleaner cut by having your butcher grind and package your meat right in front of you.

Does the idea of meat containing this "pink slime" worry you?

How do you make your meat purchases?

I grew up on a dairy farm where we were able to butcher our own meats; however, we don't have the farm anymore. I never realized how lucky we were to be able to do that. We have to buy everything from the grocery store now and reading this article really makes me want to go back! Disgusting!

I'm sure this is just a tiny part of what we don't know about our USDA approved food!

I'm purchasing a meat grinder attachment for my stand mixer so that I can make my own ground beef. It's the only way I feel I can protect my family!

I don't eat meat and this is one of the reasons why. I can't trust what's in it. So I stick to a vegetarian diet and I'm very happy :D

We need to take a stand on our food. If we keep buying and wanting "cheap" prices, this is what happens. Let your voices be heard!

It makes you wonder what else is in our food and what else the USDA is not telling us.

In my opinion, there is always something to campaign against the food industry. Honestly, there is probably something else that we are currently eating that hasn't killed us but we haven't heard about yet. We will learn about it next year and create a hype about all of the cancer causing ingredients and such yet we ate it for how long and are fine? We are all dying from the moment we are born, so, if it tastes good, eat it.

It absolutely worries me! It disgusts me, actually. If it has to be turned into something "edible" that's just total crap... I can't believe they just wash the meat in ammonia and then feed it to people!! This should NOT be available to anyone and you can bet your house on it that all of these RICH government workers, politicians etc do not end these cuts of meat. They're sitting over there with a fillet and want US and our CHILDREN to eat the scraps... Like we're peasants and we're being thrown scraps like we're animals. This makes me so angry! My child will never eat a school lunch. I don't need M. Obama to tell me what to do, I'll pack way better lunches than the DOG FOOD that they want to serve to the children. I hope the petitions help bring a "change".

Honestly I dont know what to eat nowadays with all the sickness and E coli generation keeps popping up. What is there safe to eat? From meat to produce..who knows? It's even bugging me where my vegetables come from. Living in Florida, I have seen plantation next to a cemetery..it is gross and makes me vomit! Everytime I buy vegetables I tried not to think about it...Gardening should be my next things to do. Do we have someone out there inspect everything in behalf of the people that we can trust on? really trust...

I am concern about what we feed our children. We need to put at stop to this and be aware of what the companies are selling us to feed our families. It is a disgrace what this world has come to, we are destroying ourselves and our future generations. No more junk on our foods.
