You may have noticed there's been a buzz about Dr. Seuss recently, that's because it's Dr. Seuss' 108th birthday this month and this year also sees the release of the Dr Seuss movie "The Lorax".  This birthday celebration also coincides with the 14th annual Read Across America Day, an event that is created and sponsored by the National Education Association.

The NEA came up with the idea for Read Across America in 1997 as a way to get kids to celebrate and become more involved with reading. Their website offers some great information about Read Across America as well as some ideas on how to get kids excited about and involved in the event. To participate in this great initiative we're sharing some of our favorite books by this celebrated author! To win one of our prizes this week, write a review for your favorite Dr. Seuss or any kids book!

To start this Dr. Seuss celebration off right, we found this classic video of Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham

And now, our favorites!

· Horton Hears a Who!:Horton Hears a WhoHorton the elephant of the Jungle of Nool hears a small speck of dust talking to him. The speck of dust is actually a tiny planet, home to a city called Who-ville, inhabited by microscopic-sized inhabitants known as Whos and led by a character known as the Mayor.

· How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The Grinch, a bitter, cave-dwelling, cat-like creature tries to steal everything related to Christmas by impersonating Santa Claus. Eventually he realizes he has a heart for Christmas after all.

· The Cat in the Hat: The Cat in the Hat brings his companions, Thing One and Thing Two, to a household of two young children one rainy day. Exotic and exuberant forms of chaos ensue while the children wonder how they are going to explain what happens to their mother.

· The Lorax: The LoraxChronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax (a mossy, bossy, man-like creature resembling an emperor tarmin) who speaks for the trees against the greedy Once-ler.

· Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!: One of the few books published after Dr. Seuss’ death, the story surrounds a school that is well liked by its students notably because of its many eccentric teachers.

So there are our favorite Dr. Seuss books, but what if you spend time with a child who isn’t old enough to read yet, or simply won’t? Learninggamesforkids.com is a great website that features a number of free games for preschool and elementary school age children. The games are educational and will teach children about topics such as math, social studies, science, geography, health, and so much more. They also have a new mobile app so your kids can watch videos or play games on your phone.

I bought my daughter the Dr. Seuss book "There's A Wocket in my Pocket" when she was 2. She is 3 years old now and still has me read the book all the time. It is a story about a little boy and all of the strange creatures that live in his house for example the "gellar in the cellar" or "the jurtain in the curtain" It is a fun and silly story with words that make my daughter laugh.

When my sister was pregnant with my oldest nephew one of my first purchases for the baby was a large collection of Dr. Seuess books. I cherished mine as a child and my sister scribbled in every one of them. I even included a note for her to try not to write in all of these. I have so many favorites that it is hard to pick just one. I believe "Green Eggs and Ham" is one of my top ten at least. The rhyming makes it easy for kids to read and the bright fun silly colors make it a delight to flip each page.

my son LOVED theLorax movie!! he loved the book & all DrSeuess books when he was younger! Now that he is 7 & in 1st grade he is reading on his own he is really into chapter books! right now he loves The Adventures of Captain UnderPants by Dav Pilkey. it is the story & adventures of two little boys who create the perfect super hero - their teacher! i have caught him laughing to himself in his room. i dont have to ask him to take time to read (put down the 3DS) he really enjoys these books! So much we started buying them instead of getting them @ the library.

I reviewed Oh, The Places You'll Go! It is one of my favorites of Suess even though my twin nieces are called Thing One and Thing Two! I love the uplifting message that it gives and should be read in preschool and again anytime any major change in life to remind one that you have to try!

I can't just pick one Dr.Suess to like. I think they are all great books. My daughter who is 16 now, read 2 Dr.Suess books to her Pre-k class when she was just 4 years old. They were Hop on Pop and Green Eggs and Ham. All my girls loved to read Dr.Suess. Even though they have out grown the books, I still try to buy the ones we don't have in our in house library for the future (grandkids, other kids that visit). I think Dr. Suess books help kids learn to read better.

Oh, the places you'll go is our family's favorite. Everyone graduate gets a copy and cherishes it. We pass it around like a yearbook and every family member writes in it before it is given to the graduate. At the after graduation party the graduate is expected to read it to the crowd, it's tradition in our family!
