Boost your mood, improve your resolve and regulate your eating habits with some extra zzz's.

Do you pay attention to how much sleep you get each night or do you sometimes cheat yourself from valuable sleep time?  Sleep is not just vital for regular functions it's also important to help us with stress management and reducing daytime fatigue.

If you gave yourself some new diet and fitness resolutions this year or you're working to cut back or quit a habit, you should include extra sleep in your plan.  It will help improve your mood when you are feeling deprived and increase your resolve to meet that goal.  Many people make bad food choices when they are tired.  Do you want to be sharp and full of energy every day?  Well, it may be easier to achieve than you may think.  How you feel while you are awake, greatly depends on how you sleep.

If you struggle to get a good night of sleep you are not alone.  Some people find it difficult to sleep through the night without at least one bout of restlessness or running to the bathroom. Others find it difficult to fall asleep or wake up in the morning.  According to a recent SheSpeaks poll 62.8% of you said you sleep poorly during these days of shorter daylight. 17.5% reported having continuous sleep problems. Many of the problems that make it difficult to sleep are emotional or environmental. Reducing these factors will help your ability to sleep through the night.

Some simple sleep strategies can be essential for a deep sleep. Here are our five sleep-promoting techniques to enhance the quality of sleep you get:

  1. Keep a regular sleep schedule: Go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every day.
  2. Create a relaxing bedtime routine: Keep noise down with a sound machine or fan and keep your room slightly cool (around around 65° F).
  3. Exercise regularly: 30mins of activity anytime during the day will help you sleep more deeply. You can also do stretches before bed.
  4. Eat right: Avoid large meals at night, cut down on caffeine after lunch, and refrain from drinking alcohol before bed. Alcohol will create a restless sleep waking you up 4-5hours in. If you want a light snack around bedtime aim for a low-sugar cereal, granola or banana.
  5. Read at bedtime: Watching TV before bed stimulates your brain and therefore wakes you up. Reading a book is both non-stimulating and will keep you out of your head, helping you avoid stressing and planning the next day.

Most importantly, remember to make sleep a priority. Instead of cutting back on it for other tasks you have to complete, schedule it on your list. Having a good night rest will lay the foundation for a more productive, creative day.

Do you have certain products you use to help relax and get comfortable for a good night's sleep, maybe a clock, or super soft bedding, a favorite bath product or a good book?  Whatever you use to get ready for bed we'd like to hear your recommendations.

I buy a new set of pillows each January. That is when I find them on sale. I pay attention to the description...such as side sleeper, back sleeper etc. This usually helps us sleep better. I also do NOT have a tv in our bedroom.

I use a sound machine. I never thought of one, thought it was useless. Then I actually received it free and had to complete a survey on it. Now I love it! I cannot sleep without it on. I use the sound of the ocean waves. Drowns everything else out!

I love to take a hot bath, with lavender essential oils and then have a cup of Chammomile tea to wind down before bed.

There are a lot of great recommendations here, but I'd like to add the Sleep Cycle app I recently purchased for my iPod Touch/iPhone. I've been having restless sleep lately and, after reading through the Sleep Cycle reviews and trying it out on my own, I'd recommend it. Only after five days of using it, I believe I'm getting a better night of rest. There's nothing magical about it, more or less a reality check on how many hours of "Deep Sleep" i've been getting, and realizing that I can't go on 4 hours of sleep and function well the following day. It's opened my eyes to exactly how much "rest" I get every night. I also like that it customizes to your sleeping pattern to gently wake you up during the best time. um, yeah.... I don't think I understand it all, but it seems to be working for me. :] It's only 99¢ in itunes, can't go wrong with that price. you can read more about it yourself on sleepcycle.com Happy Sleeping!!

I have to gradually wake myself up - I set my alarm on 5 minute increments and that gets me up after about 3 rings - I'm a heavy sleeper.

I use white noise (humidifier or fan or sleep machine) and a sleep mask to block out light.

On nights when I want uninterrupted sleep I spray onto my pillow Bath & Body Works "Sleep" spray, in the scent of Black Camomile. It smells just like coconut lime verbena, and in addition to making me sleep easier, it reminds me of times on vacation when I'd smell the coconut lime scent.

I am trying to read before bed. I find that if I play on my phone right before I try to fall asleep I ended up never falling right to sleep when I try.

I be sure to turn off the tv and read for half an hour before bed. I also use a heating pad to warm up the bed before I get under the sheets: )

Lately, I've been so busy to even make it to bed that by the time I get there, I have no problems falling asleep. These are some great tips. I found that I have to cut caffeine at noon. Even if I have a pop at 2pm, it will affect my sleeping greatly. A glass of milk at night seems to help as well.

I was having difficulty sleeping, and I think a lot of it had to do with the pillow I was using. I kept waking up with a cramped neck and shoulders. I went out and bought a memory foam pillow. It was a little pricey, but it came with a five year warranty. I love that pillow! My head sinks right into it, and I sleep much better now. It was definately worth it!

My favorite thing about my sleep routine is my bed. A few years ago we purchased a mattress from Bedinthebox.com, and since then, I have been sleeping very well and no aches and pains in my back and shoulders like I had before.
