The smell of snow in the air. The sound of family members' laughter filling the house. Turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie on the table. Eggnog and hot chocolate filling our bellies. The glint of the colored lights decorating the neighborhood.

The holidays are just upon us and with that comes all the wonderful moments we're about to share with our loved ones. In addition to the  food, family, and gift-giving that make the holidays special, it's also the decorations around the home. It's the wreaths, the lights, the snowmen. It's the decorations that remind us it's THAT time of year.

And while this may be the first time you will be decorating your home for the holidays or the hundreth, we hope to get you started early and in the holiday spirit by sharing a few do-it-yourself ideas and also giving away some amazing holiday decorations!

Here are a few simple do-it yourself ideas that can help brighten your home:

  • A simple but classy way to dress up your dining room is to wrap each place setting with a length of wide, pretty ribbon. Do it in satin for a graphic statement, or in a loose organza for an elegant finish.
  • Colorful candy strands are a magical way to dress your mantel or tree. All you need is a sizable stash of wrapped treats and an ordinary office stapler. Simply staple the ends of the wrappers together in a regular pattern and voila!
  • Decorative candles are rarely cheap. Buy plain pillar candles and embellish them with thumbtacks and pushpins. Simply slide a rubber band around the candle to act as a guide, then stick in the pins to form a border at the candle's base (courtesy of www.goodhousekeeping.com)

We also want to hear from you! Share your holiday decorating secrets below and enter to WIN  fantastic holiday decorations for your home this holiday season. My family selects one night a few weeks before Christmas where we put up, and decorate our tree, as well as decorate our home while listening to Christmas carols. We then have a meal together and end the evening by watching a Christmas movie. My husband and I used to do this ourselves, but this year we are looking forward to having our son join in for the first time! In addition, we also add one special new piece either to our tree or to our home decorations each year...something special to mark what has happened that past year. This year, for example, we will be adding a "First Christmas" photo ornament for our son!

I love anything and everything to do with Christmas! One of my favorite stores for Christmas decorations is Christmas Tree Shops - go figure! I also love the Christmas candles at Yankee Candle. Their Mistletoe scent is the best - it smells just like pine! They also carry a lot of really cute decorative accessories

Rent a cherry picker for the day from your local hardware store when putting up/taking down holiday lights, and have some neighbors go in on it with you! This alleviates climbing ladders and falling off roofs. The guys can be outside bonding over their amazing light displays at the same time!

My decorating secret is to buy the really really cheap stuff, throw it away after Christmas so I don't have to store it, then buy all new stuff every year (I spend maybe $50 a year on Christmas decor). I always hated unraveling strings of lights and garland, so I decided to go disposable.

I luv to make memories with my kiddo's by decorating with the help of nature. We press leaves and make a collage with them. We also gather a few twigs from our yard and along with a few "crafty" birds that we wire to the twigs makes for a pretty table centerpiece. We also use blown eggshells and decorate with rickrack and various other items such as beads and glitter to make a Christmas tree with some of our twigs. The possibilities are endless!

Our tree is filled with ornaments from our travels, vacations or other important events in our life. As we put up the tree we reminisce with the kids and relive all of those wonderful memories!

I don't really have any secrets to decorating but as a family, we made decorations to put around the house and then we play holiday music as we put them up.

My holiday decorating secret is to have two trees in the house. One full size for the kids to decorate and one small one for me :) My tree is a little fancier and all of the ornaments are small framed photos of my children. It always grabs companies attention because the tree is full of small photos of the kids as they are growing up!

We love to decorate with snowmen, and other festive holiday things. But when Santa stuff has to come down the snowmen can stay up till around February!

I like to get ideas from Home decor magazines but my all time favorite ideas come from my kids. They are so great at making fun Holiday decorations for the house. From window hangings to fun cute little snowmen. We have a blast making things together and spend time together. My favorite place to decorate is the mantel. We stream little lights, hang stockings and place all the little creations the kids made on it :)

My tip is first always decorate while playing Holiday music in the background....it sets a fun and festive mood! Then the whole family will want to join in and help. As for decor, wall decals are my favorite thing to use when decorating. You can put them almost anywhere and they are so easy to use. I reuse them every year and people always comment on them. If you have young children, I always create a project for them to make and use as decor. For example, have them collect pine cones and decorate them with glitter. Then put them in a glass vase for a fun winter/holiday decoration!

The day after Halloween it is fair game for tearing down the Halloween decor and starting with Christmas music. My candles help set the mood and filling the house with the smell of pumpkin bread and chex mix so we have something to munch on while we decorate! I like to make an ornament to add to our collection each year. And this year I plan on hand painting little wooden boxes that are big enough to fill with a gift card and a little treat to give a little bit of a personal touch for some of the special people on my list.

I use the internet to get my ideas. Most of my crafty ideas come from the internet.

I like to take a shallow clear glass bowl. Add some water and real cranberries. Add some ivory colored floating candles. An easy, cheap, beautiful display.
