Tell Us Your Favorite Halloween Costume & Win

Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.

The Rituals

Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.

The Costumes

As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging.  This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions?  Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Tell us your favorite Halloween Costume in the comments below and you'll be entered to Win 1 of 4 Spooky Halloween Prizes! The prizes are a TWIX® Halloween Prize Pack, Halloween Chef, Halloween Decorations & Halloween Accessories packs . See below for more details. My husband refuses to dress up so I made this costume which was very easy for him to tolerate: I took an old hat and covered it with a cloud made of cotton balls (with a cardboard lightning bolt coming out of it), cut-outs of a sun, some snowflakes and raindrops. When he wore it he said he was "under the weather"!

There was a lot of road construction near our home last year so I went to a neighbors Halloween party as a construction barrel. It got a lot of laughs. This year my husband and I are going as Ma and Pa Kettle. I'll put my hair in a messy bun and wear a polka dot dress with an apron. I am also rolling up some socks and pinning them low on the inside of the dress so it looks like I have saggy bosoms. Best of all I get to yell at my husband all night while he just sits there and says, "Yes Ma."

My favorite all time costume was my daughters first Halloween when she was a bunny. It was a home made white bunny outfit with a little pink nose. When I think of it, it brings me back to her innocent days.. hahaha

My fave costume was probably when I was the Demigoddess of Accessorizing. I wore a black cat suit (you could do leotard and tights, too), pinned all of my pins to various places and wore every single piece of costume jewelry I owned. Add a crazy hat and tie a scarf around your middle and there you go!

A cute story.. I was caregiver for my 96 yo grandfather. When my gramma was alive they had 2 costumes of jailbirds they each wore. It got alot of attention, especially at their age. At halloween grandpa and I would wear the costumes and i would take him to lunch at a restaurant. He loved the attention. We got so many compliments and laughs.. We had a great time.. What memories!!

One year, a girl came to the door on Halloween wearing a sweaterdress and pearls, with a bouffant red wig. I asked her who she was. "I'm Peg Bundy!" she said, grabbed a whole handful of candy out of the bowl, and skipped off down the path. It was the grabbing the whole handful of candy that made the costume work for me. I had a great laugh at that one.

My favorite costume was from just after I graduated high school. That Halloween we had a 'post graduation' Halloween party and I dressed up like a female pirate, cutlass and all ;) We had a blast!

My freind and I won a contest once buy dressing as a two-headed lady. I made the costume from a cardboard box covered with fabric for the dress, matching wigs, and over-applied makeup. It was hilarious watching us go down stairs, or dance!

I love using pop culture cues, I think my favorite was Margot Tenenbaum from The Royal Tenenbaums but when nothing that year strikes my fancy I try to get creative. Last year I was a claw machine (the ones where stuffed animals need to be grabbed out with a claw that never actually work!) and my husband was a quarter. This year I'll be a toddler from Toddlers and Tiaras and my husband is being a stage dad!

My son, Logan, and his best friend Dustin (when they were around 17) went to Salvation Army and bought some huge clothing. They then purchased a roll of bubble wrap and masking tape. They helped each other wrap the bubble wrap all over their bodies and then got dressed in the huge clothes, grabbed their skateboards, and went to the skate boarding club. They looked hilarious. I still have pics of them skateboarding with their costumes on. They looked like sumo wrestlers and would run up to each other and do belly slaps and fall down. Fun times!

Maybe it will be this years. I bought a costume online but it hasn't arrived yet but me and my husband will dressing up together for the first time as vampires. Of course in my costume I will freeze so it better look good! Our kids will be the cutest together. Our 2 year old daughter will be a monkey and her 5 month old sister will be a bannana. We're going for pics Saturday. I'm so excited I love Halloween.
