Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.
The Rituals
Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.
The Costumes
As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging. This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions? Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Good Luck and Happy Halloween!
My favorite is my Yorkie dressed as a lion. He already thinks he's king of the house, why not king of the beasts? ;-)
I have done many a tricker treating taking my chilldren around when they were younger, and there is one little neighbor boy that always comes to mind this time of year. This little guy was soooo darn cute and dressed up as Pee wee Herman for several years straight. With school parties, parades, and trick or treating around the neighborhood Halloween was always a fun time of year. I still enjoy handing out the candy to the children especially the little ones. :) Happy Halloween Everyone
My favorite is a harajuku girl.. This was so fun to do and is so funky, trendy and CUTE!! You can do all the things you have seen in the magazines all year long but didnt feel edgy enough to do. The crazy hair, the pucker lips and tube socks with a tutu. I made a no sew tutu from a tutorial I found in the web and it was sooooo easy!! 30 mins done!!... I
So far my favorite costume of my son's has been his scarecrow costume. He already had a shirt, overalls, hat and boots. I used raffia to "stuff" him and let it hang ou from under his hat and out of his pockets. Then I put a very light layer of paint on his face to make him look gritty. He was super cute!
My favorite costume was when I dressed up as a gumball machine. I had a red skirt with foil on the center for the gumball machine opening, a red beret and a clear garbage bag filled with small colored balloons for the gumballs. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h166/froggy_neve/photo-1.jpg
I don't necessarily have one favorite costume. I love all homemade costumes. I think that being able to put your own personality and creativity into a costume is awesome and I love seeing what my friends and family can come up with every year. As a child I always loved my mom's handmade costumes. I never liked looking like everyone else. Even when we bought a costume, we'd embellish it to make it just right.
I RSVP'd for the Twitter party and attended. For whatever reason, I felt I got lost in the discussions. Anyway, my favorite costume for Halloween is: My husband dressed up as pilgrims right down to every detail. Then on Thanksgiving, my husband actually put his costume back on and the grand kids loved it.
My favorite costume was when my oldest son dressed up as Woody from Toy Story. The smile on his face was priceless!
When I was a child, my Mother and older sister and I all dressed up like witches. My mother made the costumes and they were great. This was just about when the Wizard of Oz came out so of course we all had to look like the wicked witch of the west. We all went trick or treating and I was so proud to walk with my mother and be dressed like her. She made the most beautiful costumes from barely nothing. We didn't have much money but she always found a way to make beautiful embellishments on costumes. Just recently I was invited to a Halloween party and I asked my mother if she had her old witch costume. She did and just like her it was well preserved and in wonderful condition. I went to the party wearing that costume proudly. It was not just because it was a great costume which it was, but most of all to wear her costume was an honor for me and the entire night I felt such joy. That is the best for me.
My mom passed away but before she did the last present she sent to my daughter was a Raggedy Ann book and the 2 dolls (Ann & Andy). My daughter just adored her grandma so when we were deciding what she should be for Halloween last year my daughter asked if her grandma could see her costume from heaven. I replied of course and she said she wanted to be Raggedy Ann. I took a leap of faith and decided to make her costume (I have never sewn in my life). A friend helped me and it really was a labor of love. She looked so adorable and at one point during halloween she said I love you grandma. True story. Not sure how we will ever be able to top last year, not sure I want to.
my favorite halloween costume was pregnant nun - it always is a conversation piece & gets many comments. people think it's funny!
As a child my favorite was a bunny costume that my mom made for me! I wore them as jammies for months! My Dad's favorite was when he dressed me as California Raisin in a gragage bag-I just ended up looking like poop!
My fav was when my Dad made brother a Lion Tamer , suit and top hat, whip and all and me as the lion. My Dad was very good at making our Halloween outfits, very creative. He made my son a tube of toothpaste, then another year a crayon with the box of the crayons and he was the green one.
My favorite costume was my daughter's cinderella costume. She was so happy to get it and she was beautiful! My son was dressed as a mechanic from cars the movie one year!
absolutely loved the little cow costume. it had a cow bell and we decorated the face with black / white makeup to match the markings in the costume. such great memories that year. I get teary eyed every time I look at the picture of it.
