Halloween is more than just a day to wear a costume. It's a day we suspend reality and pretend. It's a chance for us to be kids again and let our imagination run wild. We can paint our faces, get dressed up, and gorge on our favorite candy. We can have super powers, be a blond for a day, or impersonate our favorite celebrity.

The Rituals

Halloween is more than just October 31st; it's an experience. We decorate our homes, de-tangle the spiderwebs, put up the gravestones and lay out the body parts. We visit haunted houses, bob for apples and, of course, Trick-or-Treat. We attend Halloween Parties to show off our costumes and check out the creativity of others.

The Costumes

As much fun as Halloween can be, sometimes the thought of actually coming up with our costume can be a bit challenging.  This season we'd like to help you tap into the SheSpeaks collective wisdom to help conjure up great Halloween costume ideas for this year and next. Do you have a preference for gory, scary, or witty or are you into the more abstract objects, animals or expressions?  Do you like to be something from the past or a trend that's popular today?

Tell us your favorite Halloween Costume in the comments below and you'll be entered to Win 1 of 4 Spooky Halloween Prizes! The prizes are a TWIX® Halloween Prize Pack, Halloween Chef, Halloween Decorations & Halloween Accessories packs . See below for more details. I think that the best costumes are the ones that are the most original and creative. I hate seeing the same ones over and over. I am a huge Marilyn Monroe fan but probably woulldn't dress up as her because it's so common. I've always had a very hard time finding and deciding on a costumes each year because I don't like the cliche. This year I am going for an orignial pin-up 50's girl BUT my twist is I'm buying actualy pin-up clothes instead of a costume. Can't seem to find a costume that isn't skimpy... imagine that :)

I think my favorite was when I dressed my husband (who normally doesn't dress up) as a retired Hooters girl.We got some clearence orange sweats and cut them off to shorts, a shirt from the resturant, and used some old knee highs for his chest (pinned to the inside of the shirt). He was the hit of the party; years later friends still laugh about it! I say dressing up for Halloween is about having fun :)

My favorite costumes ever, was when I dressed as Velma, put my daughter in a Scooby Doo costume, and convinced my son to go dressed like Shaggy. We even painted "Mystery Machine" on our van. It was so fun to have a theme for our family (my hubby worked nights so he didn't get to participate but he would have made a great Fred!)

I loved family themed costumes. Last year we were all monsters from Monsters Inc. This year we did Alice in wonderland. I just think it is fun to dress up as a family.

My mom made me an awesome ET costume when I was 5. I loved it and wish I still had it to dress my kids in this year!

My favorite was the year I dressed as a zoo keeper and my oldest dressed as a giraffe. I had a leash on her and I had a sign on myself saying "Please feed the Animals".

I remember one year I didnt know what to be for Halloween so my dad came up with the idea of me being a cigarette box! (Remember back in those days everyone smoked and thought nothing of the consequences...) At first I thought no way but then I let him help me with it and I went out with my friends and had a blast from all the comments from everyone! Kudos to my dad!

The year "The Ring" came out I dressed as the girl from it, with a long black wig that obscured my face and white dress. I rounded a corner and because I couldn't see well with the wig I nearly collided with a group of teenage girls, they SCREAMED so loudly and my boyfriend said they leapt about two feet in the air. I didn't mean to give a Halloween scare but I must admit it was a lot of fun!

My favorite costume is my wicked witch. I paint my face and do my nails in black. I have the perfect witch laugh. What makes it the best is every year for five years I have dressed up in my costume made witches brew with a floating eyeball and read the story Piggy Pie to my sons classroom. I really miss this tradition and can't wait to resume it in three years with my grandchildern. Halloween is my Christmas.

I have had several favorites over the years. An authentic looking Wonder Woman costume where Michael Keeton stopped in the middle of his question and answer session to point out, over the microphone, that he has never had his picture taken by Wonder Woman before. :) I've been a Skeleton Bride (most fun movie makeup ever!), I was pebbles when my entire family dressed up as The Flintstones, a green M&M with white gogo boots, a belly dancer, a sexy indian, while my husband was a cheif at the "Famous Cliche's" themed party...OH, the sexy UPS girl made out of a real UPS costume - saying that UPS and Versace got together to change the uniforms for the ladies...that was a fun one. This year we're going to be "Bonnie and Clide, just having robbed a bank and heading to Vegas" at the "Apocalypse Tomorrow, Party Today" themed party. There were many more I could list...such a FUN time of year!

my favorite costume was actually my husband....what he did was a few weeks before Halloween, we put out a scarecrow on a bale of hay on the front porch, made it noticable for all to see....the night of giving out candy, my husband dressed up exactly as the scarecrow we had on the porch, and sat himself on the bale of hay, and jumped up when people would comeon the porch for candy....it was so cool, he would scare the older kids, and for the younger kids he would do something cute, either say something or give them a hug....that made my Halloween un forgettable, and truly brought back the meaning of FUN :)
