Breast Milk Baby: Natural or Not Just Yet?

Our kids diaper them, cuddle them, walk them around in mini-strollers; but how much more should a baby doll teach our children about parenthood?  This is the question a lot of parents are asking since the Breast Milk Baby doll from Berjuan Toys hit the market in Spain.  Children are able to pretend they are breast-feeding the doll by holding the doll to their chest while wearing a vest equipped with sensors that trigger the toy to make suckling noises and motions.

Some parents have expressed outrage that this toy is on the market and will be available in U.S. stores in just a few weeks for the retail price of $99.  They feel a toy that teaches a child how to breast feed is inappropriate and forces kids to grow up too fast.  Mother of two, Becky Orsinger, was recently quoted in a CBS news report stating why she believes this is not a toy she feels would be appropriate for her daughter to play with.  Orsinger says, "I don’t think it’s a skill I need to teach her specifically at this point wih a doll.  While she’s four years old?  While she’s four years old."

Both the toy company and other proponents of the Breast Milk Baby doll think the doll is a great educational tool that allows kids to mimic a very natural mother-baby experience.  Mother and member of the well-known breast feeding advocacy group La Leche, Laura Korot, tells CBS that she could have used this doll when she had her second daughter and felt that her first child was feeling left out.  Korot explains, "If she could have had a doll similar to that, it could have helped her feel a little more involved in the feeding process."

So what do you think of the Breast Milk Baby doll?

Would you consider buying something like this for your child?

Breast feeding is the natural way....I have no problem with this for Moms who believe that breast is best or Moms that are open to teching their children about breast feeding. For those that are offended, don't buy it! I don't buy my children the violent Power Rangers and I don't buy guns. They are still in the store. It doesn't mean my kids get them!! Any breastfeeding Mom that has an older child can't deny that the older child has seen them breastfeeding and has probably asked questions. There is nothing wrong with this....breast truly is BEST!! Let's teach future generations!

Wow what they won't do for a buck. I don't know how I personally would approach this if my daughter wanted it but I know my family would be outraged if I was to get her something of this nature. But when it really comes down to it I would rather my daughter learn something like this over how to dress like some of the other dolls out there right now.

Not sure that there is a need to develop a doll like this since children will mimic what they see anyway. They will do it with a regular doll, or a manufactured doll anyway. Breastfeeding is natural, and my daughter has no hang-ups after watching me feed her brother.

I don't think it's really necessary to "teach" a child breastfeeding through a toy doll. When I had my second my daughter (3 years old) would take her toy doll and pretend to breastfeed. She only did it once or twice. No need to have a the doll actually mimic the sucking motion. My reaction is whatever, if you don't like it don't buy it. $99 is a lot of money to spend on a toy doll, I don't care what it does.

I don't mind this, but I wouldn't buy it. When I was breastfeeding my youngest daughter my 2yr old would pretend to breastfeed all of her dolls, she didn't need a special "breastfeeding doll".

sorry, but breast feeding is a natural urge for girls. It doesn't need to be encouraged or taught. Why don't they just make Barbie and Ken sex dolls too. We are feeding into these kids to be adults way to young. Let kids be kids. They are perfectly happy changing dolls diapers and pushing t hem around in little strollers.

I think its a great idea. My 4 year old mimmics me with her dolls anyway so there's nothing new here 4 us. My 10 year old did the same thing 5 years ago so I don't see a problem. If you don't like it don't buy it. It's simple.

Really I see no issue in it...we teach young girls all the time to care for their dolls or 'babies' we teach them to potty train them, to bathe them to feed them and to cuddle and rock them and we think it's just darn cute. There is no difference here except for the hang up that we adults and society have over breasts. I breast fed all three of my children and I have no problems teaching my young daughter what her breasts were made for, and it's certianly not for shoving in a push up bra and flaunting them to the world. Her breasts will not determine or define who she is, they are for the soul purpose of nurturing her babies, just as any other woman, whether or not they use them for that purpose. My boys 8yrs older and 14 yrs older than my daughter watched me nurse her, they know and understand what breasts are for and so will she. Let it go folks, we've got so much more to worry about as parents than (gasp!) teaching our daughter about breastfeeding.

I think that this is a great new toy. I wish it was around when my daughter was younger. She had asked me when she was little how a baby breast feeds and it would have been nice to have a way to show her that she could understand. I think the only parents who would disapprove of this toy would be ones that also don't like when women breast feed in public. Many women are afraid the first time that they have to breast feed their newborns. By being exposed to something like this at a young age could help dimminish some of that fear.

I don't see any problem with it. If a mom doesn't like it and doesn't want her daughter to have it then the solution is simple, just don't buy it! But I think it could be a great resource for a mother who does want to teach her daughter what she's doing with the baby. I see no reason why a breastfeeding doll will take away a child from acting like a kid.

I wouldn't buy this for my daughter. I think the mom who was quoted in the CBS news report was correct.. At four years old that isn't something that your child needs to learn. Feeding a baby a bottle is one thing, but I would be afraid of sending the wrong message to my daughter at this age. Like I said, not my cup of tea, but for other moms out there that like this for their daughter I guess that is their choice. I just think I would find it a little wierd if I saw a little girl trying to breasfead her doll.

That is just a little much. Little girls as it is are growing up way too fast and promote them to breast feed is taking it a lil too far. granted no one if forcing anyone to buy the doll, but it will be advertized for children to see. What 6-11 yr old little girl needs to know how to breast feed a baby? She has the rest of her life to worry about mothing a child, let these kids be kids

It's doesn't bother me, my oldest son used to breastfeed his stuffed animals when I first had my youngest. If you don't like the product, don't buy it, no one is forcing you to do so.
