Toning Footwear: Fact or Fiction?

If you think staying healthy and fit takes more work than simply wearing a new pair of sneakers you are probably right.  We have all heard the claims of some of the new footwear on the market that will supposedly help tone your buttocks and thighs just by wearing them while you go about your daily activities.  You may have even heard a friend or two swear they feel the burn and soreness that comes along with a vigorous exercise after wearing these shoes.  But could this really be true?

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin aren’t buying it.  A recent article from Time magazine discusses the researchers findings on the footwear.  The team of researchers from the Exercise and Health Program at the University of Wisconsin chose three brands of sneakers that made claims of burning calories and toning muscles.  The researchers also used a regular running shoe as the control shoe.

What they found was that when women from the study worked out there was absolutely no difference in heart rate, oxygen consumption, or calories burned whether they were wearing a regular running shoe or one of the “enhanced” fitness shoes.  The study also found that the women experienced no differences in the perceived difficulty they were feeling during their workouts.

But there may be a reason why so many people claim they feel sore, as though they have gotten a workout, after wearing these shoes.  Researchers believe this has to do with the sole of the shoes making the wearer feel slightly off-balance.  Lead researcher, John Porcari, describes the effect the off-balance feeling may be giving people.  Porcari says, “If I put a rock in your shoe, you’re going to walk differently and you’ll use different muscles and you’ll be sore but after a while your body is going to get accustomed to it.”  If anything, the shoe may be improving your balance but no study has been done on this aspect yet.

On the plus side, even if the shoes themselves don’t work it seems people who purchase them are walking more - perhaps to test if the shoe will do what it says.  Whatever the reason, if it gets people out and walking they will be doing all the toning and calorie burning regardless of their footwear choice.

What do you think of the sneakers that claim to tone and tighten?

Would you give these shoes a try with the current research reporting they don’t actually work?

I love my Sketchers Shape Ups. Am I thinner? No. Are my feet pain free for the first time in years. Yes. I love them because they are comfortable and keep me pain free in my feet. I do recommend them, but tell people to walk around the shoe store in them for at least 15-20 minutes to make sure they can wear them.

I have worn the Reebok Easy tones since last winter, with the exception of the summer when i live in flip flops. I think the shoes work to a point, i have found that when i then don't wear them that i have muscle aches which i am assuming are from the muscles the shoes where working on when i wore them.

They may not tone, but I have to agree with everyone that commented on their comfort. I work in a retail store and one employee got them and before you know it we were all wearing them. They do seem to help with back pain...not sure why or if there is any science to it...maybe just cushier?!?

They look totally ridiculous on people, like an orthopedic shoe... you know, some poor people were born with one leg shorter than the other, and they have to have wear these kind of shoes on the other leg to make them even - that's what they remind me of. I will never buy an ugly shoe like that, no matter how "toning" they claim to be...

I was just thinking about these the other day after see another commercial. All the comments are great. Price is ridiculous but if it helps my posture and back pain it would be worth it I suppose.

Sorry, I couldn't get over the fact that the "tone & tightening" shoes were just plain hideous looking ... almost Moon Shoe like LoL .... & the price - I just couldn't ever wrap my mind around ever dishing out that much money for them (over $110 when they 1st came out). I let the store keep them LOLLLLLLL

I do not think any shoe will help body tone just because of the way the shoe is made great gimmick! If you do tone or loose weight it's because you spent 125.00 and now feel you have to get your money's worth and walk.... that's how the weight is coming off...!!What ever it takes.

I bought the Sketchers brand toning shoes last Christmas and I do like them - somewhat. They are very cushy. I actually do feel like I have to work harder to do the same workout as with my normal walking shoe, like I can't walk as fast because it does feel like I'm walking in sand, like they say. They did tell me, in the Sketchers store, that these are NOT FOR RUNNING, just walking, because of the instability. They're ok, I like them enough, but I won't buy them again once they wear out.

I've asked my girl friends how they like their Skechers toning sneakers and they all have said they like them and they work. I've been eyeing toning sneakers in the stores and wanting to try them, I just recently started a walking program since it's finally cooled off enough to get outside to exercise. But still not completely sold on forking over $125.

I finally bought a pair when Champion came out with a reasonably priced version. I took the toning with a grain of salt but bought them because they are so comfortable. I wear sneakers every day because of plantar fasciitis and like the added "height" these give me. I have to say that they are comfortable and I find that my posture is better when wearing them. As a result, I have not had back pain after a long day of work.

I own the Skechers Tone Up Sandels, and just bought the fur lined clog because I got a great deal on them. I agree with the posts that say they really don't do much as far as "toning and firming" goes, but I definitely have better posture, and my back hurts less. I have had two back surgeries from a car accident, so the fact my back feels better (probably mostly from better posture) makes them worth it for me.

i know a lot of people at work wears these and all i have to say is that I haven't seen ANY change in their body shape or tone. All i hear them complain about is how they are still fat. this is them wearing it for over 2 years. I have noticed that the soles get worn down quite a lot. either that or because they are heavy, it puts more stress and flattens the soles more? i seriously don't know. All the ads and commercials are always with beautiful shaped women who are already toned and looking like models. good luck to those who try them...i am not a believer.
