Toning Footwear: Fact or Fiction?

If you think staying healthy and fit takes more work than simply wearing a new pair of sneakers you are probably right.  We have all heard the claims of some of the new footwear on the market that will supposedly help tone your buttocks and thighs just by wearing them while you go about your daily activities.  You may have even heard a friend or two swear they feel the burn and soreness that comes along with a vigorous exercise after wearing these shoes.  But could this really be true?

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin aren’t buying it.  A recent article from Time magazine discusses the researchers findings on the footwear.  The team of researchers from the Exercise and Health Program at the University of Wisconsin chose three brands of sneakers that made claims of burning calories and toning muscles.  The researchers also used a regular running shoe as the control shoe.

What they found was that when women from the study worked out there was absolutely no difference in heart rate, oxygen consumption, or calories burned whether they were wearing a regular running shoe or one of the “enhanced” fitness shoes.  The study also found that the women experienced no differences in the perceived difficulty they were feeling during their workouts.

But there may be a reason why so many people claim they feel sore, as though they have gotten a workout, after wearing these shoes.  Researchers believe this has to do with the sole of the shoes making the wearer feel slightly off-balance.  Lead researcher, John Porcari, describes the effect the off-balance feeling may be giving people.  Porcari says, “If I put a rock in your shoe, you’re going to walk differently and you’ll use different muscles and you’ll be sore but after a while your body is going to get accustomed to it.”  If anything, the shoe may be improving your balance but no study has been done on this aspect yet.

On the plus side, even if the shoes themselves don’t work it seems people who purchase them are walking more - perhaps to test if the shoe will do what it says.  Whatever the reason, if it gets people out and walking they will be doing all the toning and calorie burning regardless of their footwear choice.

What do you think of the sneakers that claim to tone and tighten?

Would you give these shoes a try with the current research reporting they don’t actually work?

My daughter got herself a pair of these sneakers and so did my mom. It didn't whip them into shape but it did help them with their backs. They had a better posture and they complained less of back pain! Would I try them well only if they lowered the prized than maybe! I just don't believe on over the night miracles anymore!

I had been thinking of buying a pair of Reebok's version. They seem to be slightly nicer looking than the Sketchers, which someone already commented on as looking "orthopedic". I don't know now. I like the idea that it improves posture, but I will not be able to use them all day like others who do so at work. How much do they improve your posture and backpain with limited use?? (1 hour/day) Anyone use them like this and still get those results?

I have a hard time finding comfortable shoes due to my feet being very sensitive, I can honestly say if nothing else, they are very comfortable. Due to the thicker soles, you have that much of a cushion which seems to reduce the lower back pain and actually achy feet. As far as tone and fit, well, if it is, that's a bonus. Mine actually came from Kmart for $19.99 and I can say I would buy these again due to comfort alone. It seems like the tennis shoes that are in the market today don't have very much cushion at all on the inside, so if comfort is important to you, I'd recommend them, if weight loss and toning is what you are looking for, I don't think they make a noticeable difference.

I have 2 pair of Sketchers Tone Ups - I wear one pair for work as a Medical Assistant where I am on my feet all day. The other pair I bought to wear when I'm off. I love them. They may not actually tone, but I don't have knee pain anymore, I stand straighter, and they are super comfortable. I have been able to start walking a mile every day for exercise after being on my feet all day. I am very satisfied with these shoes.

If you want to to buy a pair of shoes that will actually TONE your legs... not just help with posture, balance, etc... try Trim Treads.. you wear them for 30 minutes a day and the way they're made and how you would walk on them would mimic calf raises. You have to look at them to understand... they don't look like your normal toning shoes. Go to trimtreads.com. I have not tried them, but they're only one I would buy (and will buy when I get the extra money)

I recently purchased a pair at Pay Less. I absolutely love them! Do they tighten and tone? Not sure. What I do know is they are very comfortable and they are the first pair of shoes in over 7 years I have purchase that do not hurt my feet. They also help me with my posture I have noticed and even my husband and friends have notice I walk straighter. $35 well spent

this was VERY interesting to read because I have been considering buying a pair of those shoes for some time. I'm definitely NOT going to buy them - I'm going to stick to my regular old running shoes!!

I've had Fit Flops for several years now...they have not done anything to tone my legs, but they are very comfortable. I have bad posture and my back will hurt when i walk around for a long period of time. My Fit Flops really do keep my back from hurting better than any other pair of shoes I've had.

frogqueen75 thanks for your comment. Maybe I should have clarified my comment. I have three herinated discs in my back, 3 in my neck & knee problems from a car accident, surgery is not a option to alleviate these issues. As a result of my injuries I developed bone suprs due to improper walking ,confirmed by my orthapedic Doctor- which was a issue since the accident. Since I started wearing Skechers Shape ups & Sleek fit Shape ups I walk straighter, have No pain anywhere and my spurs are not bothering me - even when I wear flip flops after a shower or pool use. For me the Skechers Shape Ups - Sleek Fit are a improvement to my life, as I am not dependant on pain meds. to get through the day/

I know they are apealing and tempting to try but i think people MANY people can confuse the thought of toning and weight loss and will be disappointed with not losing two hundred pounds(i exagerate) by buying new shoes.

I really wanted to try the Sketchers tone-ups so I waited for them to go on sale at Kohl's then used my 30% off coupon which made them somewhat affordable. I can't say that they helped firm up anything but they are the most comfortable sneaker I have ever owned. I have very sensitive feet that are always blistering or aching with any significant walking. I always carry blister bandaids (they work FANTASTIC) and everyone, including my husband, is always razzing me about my 'achey feet'. These sneakers made it possible to walk my dog long distances as if I were walking on cushions! For that reason alone, I love them!

Hey if someone works-out more just because they bought these shoes, they they are helping. Myself on the other hand, didn't fall for the shoes do toning. I believe just getting out there and exercising does the toning. But if it makes someone feel better to have them, then why not.
