Scandal On Sesame Street

Many of us know pop sensation Katy Perry as a sex symbol who sings songs with risque lyrics and often dresses provocatively.  But kids may be getting to know her as something else entirely, just another one of Elmo’s friends on Sesame Street.

Katy Perry recently shot a segment with Elmo on Sesame Street singing the PG version of the song “Hot N Cold”.  The music video segment was originally supposed to air on television but has so far only made it to Youtube after the video started receiving comments from parents about the way Perry was dressed, revealing too much cleavage.

Katy Perry was obviously surprised when she took to her Twitter account after hearing news that Sesame Street was cutting her segment from the show.  She writes, “Wow, looks like my play date with Elmo has been cut short.”  While many parents showed their disdain for the singer’s attire, others thought it was no big deal and couldn’t understand why it was being taken out of the show.

In the music video she is playing dress up with Elmo and is wearing a Tinker Bell dress that is cut in a heart shape at the top revealing some cleavage.  Sesame Street has responded to the negative feedback by withdrawing the segment from the television lineup and releasing a statement.  A rep for Sesame Street says, “Sesame Street has always been written on two-levels, for the child and adult.  We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver.  We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents.”

What do you think of the way Katy Perry was dressed during her Sesame Street segment?

Do you think her attire is inappropriate for a kid’s show?

I find nothing wrong with her outfit as previous posters said, children do not see things as sex objects and some of the Disney princess's wear less clothing. I would rather my child see this than some of the awful cartoons they have on nowadays.

Come on, like the Little Mermaids outfit is appropriate or Jasmine from Aladdin?? Give me a break, I saw nothing wrong with it.

I dont care for Ms. Perry's fashion statemenst in the first place, but aside from that, she could have used a different costume. A longer, less revealing princess dress would have been a better choice to play dress up with Elmo in. To me, it is teaching our young girls that dressing provacatively is both accepted and encouraged by society. I am more concerned about how it affects how they feel about themselves.

The colors she wore would appropriate but unfortunately the dress wasn't -- should have been more coverage (alot more), and perhaps tennis shoes or something!!

I posted this on facebook, but I have to post it again here because that comment about young boys just amazes me... who teaches a child? the parent. Considering kids shouldn't think of breasts in a sexual way (my boys were both breastfed, they think of breasts as just another body part.. like legs, arms etc) I don't think there's anything wrong with a little cleavage. It's people with dirty minds that get bothered by it, not kids. Kids are unselfconscious and they don't look at breasts and get disturbed or embarrassed. people need to relax and realise that first and foremost, breasts are for FEEDING BABIES.

I think its disgusting! I would NEVER let my young son watch this, I'd rather he had respect for girls and women instead of seeing them as sex objects and YES that is exactly what this kind of inappropriate dress and attitude teaches kids, especially young boys!

I adore Katy Perry and Sesame Street called upon her knowing what her style is. If they had a problem with it, they should have spoken to her before they shot the video. They didn't, they shot it, and now a few uptight parents with nothing better to do called and complained. Get over it, it's not that big of a deal and it was cute.

im sorry i think katy perry is inappropriate in general, i hate her music and everything about her... sorry... but pretending that i dont hate her or even know her, i would still say that what she is wearing is very inappropriate, i dont wear stuff like that around my son and when i have a program on thats supposed to be for him i dont want to see any one dressed like that.

The cleavage is ok, but why was Elmo shown bopping around her bare legs? It's the fact that the dress she wore is cut up to there and that they felt they had to highlight that that really bothers me.

Really, what are those high priced paid "stylists" paid to do? I thought "celebs" had them to dress them appropriately for every occasion or event. I wonder who was the director or whomever was in charge - someone wasn't on their "A game" if no one noticed what she had on during the taping. No one obviously thought of the bigger picture at the time - I guess they were star struck. As far as what she has on, kids probably see that or more anyway just walking or looking at other stuff on tv... doesn't make it right - but whatever. Aside from what Katy Perry had on, it was a cute video.
