Scandal On Sesame Street

Many of us know pop sensation Katy Perry as a sex symbol who sings songs with risque lyrics and often dresses provocatively.  But kids may be getting to know her as something else entirely, just another one of Elmo’s friends on Sesame Street.

Katy Perry recently shot a segment with Elmo on Sesame Street singing the PG version of the song “Hot N Cold”.  The music video segment was originally supposed to air on television but has so far only made it to Youtube after the video started receiving comments from parents about the way Perry was dressed, revealing too much cleavage.

Katy Perry was obviously surprised when she took to her Twitter account after hearing news that Sesame Street was cutting her segment from the show.  She writes, “Wow, looks like my play date with Elmo has been cut short.”  While many parents showed their disdain for the singer’s attire, others thought it was no big deal and couldn’t understand why it was being taken out of the show.

In the music video she is playing dress up with Elmo and is wearing a Tinker Bell dress that is cut in a heart shape at the top revealing some cleavage.  Sesame Street has responded to the negative feedback by withdrawing the segment from the television lineup and releasing a statement.  A rep for Sesame Street says, “Sesame Street has always been written on two-levels, for the child and adult.  We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver.  We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents.”

What do you think of the way Katy Perry was dressed during her Sesame Street segment?

Do you think her attire is inappropriate for a kid’s show?

It is sad to me that parents today are so accepting of anything or anyone that comes along and yet they wonder why our kids are growing up with no morals and no rules! My son is 17 and a normal, healthy, boy but even he was embarrased when I walked in while she was singing on SNL. Sex sells everything and after all, isn't that what it all comes down to? Anything to make a buck.

I thought it was fine. It seems that some of the parents minds may be running a little wild though.

I thought it was fine. I personally wouldn't have worn it and would have preferred that she was a bit more covered up, but it's done and so let's let it be and enjoy a good performance.

Well her dress is totally inappropriate for Sesame street, she's the only one i have seen dressed like that!all other guests have been on the show wearing nice non- revealing clothes...!no her dress isn't like figure-skating dresses, this is beyond them besides figure skaters don't have big bumps, even if they have the same kind of dress, they are too skinny and nothing shows, they dress up without showing.

I'm not so bothered by what she wore on sesame street but i think her music is LAME and her only goal as a celebrity is to be provocative in a trashy way. She doesn't seem to have any talent except for being skanky. I don't think you have to be a saint to be on Sesame Street, but she shouldn't be on because of how she behaves in her life,

I don't feel that her clothing choice was too provocative considering what else is shown on tv these days. The song was cute and still educational.

I cant believe this is what people are worried about commercials so more skin and are inappropriate than this video. Some people really need to get a grip.

I agree, this should be a non issue. We should be discussing all of the teenage mother shows and celebrities out there. That should be making us angry, not what Katy Perry wore. Get over it!

They probably should have chosen something different to dress her in. I used this train of thought; It's a preschool audience. They don't know either way.. however, if a preschool teacher wore this to work, it wouldn't go over well with parents or the administration. She looks lovely, for sure.. unfortunately, it makes as much sense as wearing a football uniform to ballet practice.

I don't see the big deal honestly my 3 year old watched the video and my 5 year old twins and they were more entertained with elmo dancing around. My girls thought she was dressed like tinkerbell. So really in my opinion parents worry about something that bothers then not your child. My son wasn't going "mom wow her shirt shows too much" The people at seasame street let her go on so they must not have thought something was wrong with it.

Even though I think a different dress would have been more appropriate, I don't think it's that big of deal. I thought it was cute and I think any child watching would only think of it as that way too.

I just watched the clip on youtube and didn't see the big deal. I mean we grew up watching Wonder Woman who wore less than that and turned out just fine!
