Getting Paid To Lose Weight

There are many reasons why people want to shed extra pounds; they want to live a healthier lifestyle, participate in more rigorous activities, boost their self-confidence, etc.  For some, the idea of getting paid to lose weight is the biggest motivator of all.  In the recent past we have heard reports of companies offering their employees incentives like gift cards and cruises if they lost some weight with the idea that in the long run the company will save on health costs if they have a healthier staff.  But, what if a complete stranger offered you cash?

A new independently run website that makes money on advertising and sponsorships, HealthyWage.com, is offering people the chance to sign up for a weight loss challenge with the promise of putting cash in their hands should they succeed in their goals to shed the pounds.  The website relies on corporate sponsors to provide the cash rewards to obese members who succeed in the challenge.

So far, some 5,000 people have signed up for the challenge through the site.  Members have the choice of either signing up for free and receiving a $100 cash prize if they succeed or putting down a maximum of $300 from their own pockets for a chance to win a higher stakes prize of $1000.  Since people who enter the program must be in the obese range, most of them will have to lose somewhere between 30 and 80 pounds in a 12-month period.

A recent article from Time magazine featured the website and interviewed one of the participants in the challenge.  Welmoed Sisson, who weighs over 200 pounds, must lose 50 pounds in 12 months to fall into a healthier range and receive her cash prize.  Sisson says, "Sure I’d like to look and feel better, but it is so subjective.  Money is a better motivator because it is so tangible.  You can hold it in your hand."

What do you think of the new website that offers cash prizes for losing weight?

Do you think cash is a good motivator for people to lose the weight?

I've lost over 100lbs since April of 09 and I can honestly say if I had been offered money I would have lost it much faster. I don't think what this program or site is offering is enough though but if its free why not?

well, i think that even though money is a great motivator, losing weight for money almost guarantees gaining the weight back. One must lose weight for themselves, because they need to for health reason or simply because they want to shed some pounds. In this case, joiners must be obese which means that they need to lose weight for health reasons and if the only motivator is cash, they will not keep the weight off. That is my concern and I am one that does need to lose alot of weight so I can relate and no, I will not join for a measly $100 cash prize.

Umm... I wonder if I quality? Dang, I already lost 20 pounds, so I'm out of the obese range :) too bad I didn't do the website! Oh well, I'll keep going with WW. I do think this is awesome, though admittedly odd. It seems strange that some random person should give you money for losing weight... but if it really works, power to them!

I feel that it is a win-win situation specially for those who participate. They get to be healthier and get paid for that. I just hope some people wont use this as a scam to fool people.

I have signed up, but the website seems to need some work. I have nothing to loose but the weight, so figured I would give it a try. Thx for the tip.

I love this idea!!! The Person that came up with this is a genius!!! I think money is a great motivator and it would make anyone have the strength to get up off the couch and loose those extra pounds that are making them unhealthy.

Yes, this is a program that I would sign up for and stick to! Cash is a huge motivator, and plus I'm always thinking about eating less and exercising more, so why not get paid to do something that I already want to accomplish?

Yes Cash is a great motivator to get people to loose weight, however I think instead of require people to loose 30-50 lbs, it should be based on how much you actually weigh. If I lost 30 lbs I would be considered underweight, and that would be unhealthy.

Yes, cash is a great motivated to get people to lose weight. It will give them more of a reason to become healthy. I would love to and have be trying to drop about 30 pounds. It is just so hard to stick with it. Maybe this program would motivate me enough to achieve my goals.

If your sole purpose is to win the money, it is not worth the effort. However, if you have already decided to lose weight for your health, then the money can help be a motivator. Like every other "bad habit", if you are not doing it for yourself, you are not likely to be successful in the long run. Having said that, there are times that you ask yourself if it is worth continuing on with the "new habits" and that is when the money could help get you through those rough patches.
