A New Life After Neglect

We all nurture and care for our children, worrying daily over whether they are eating enough vegetables or learning well in school.  This is why hearing a story like Dani’s is so utterly disturbing.  Danielle “Dani” Crockett was found at the age of six by authorities in her Plant City, Florida home living in a dark room the size of a walk-in closet filled with dirty diapers and cockroaches.

A St. Petersburg Times article outlines the events which took place before and after Dani was rescued and eventually taken in by a loving family.  A neighbor called police to report possible abuse of a child after seeing a small girl’s face in the window of one of the roomsDetective Mark Holste described the rescue of Dani after speaking with her mother, Michelle Crockett, and finding Dani in the closet.  Holste reported, “The pile of dirty diapers in that room must have been 4 feet high.  The glass in the window had been broken, and that child was lying there, surrounded by her own excrement and bugs.”

After the detective received Michelle Crockett’s only excuse for the state that her six-year-old daughter was in, “I’m doing the best I can,” he took the (emaciated and covered cockroach bites) child to the hospital.  At the hospital, doctors examined Dani.  It was obvious Dani had never been cared for, held, or even talked to.  She had literally only been fed    She was unable to speak, use the toilet, hold a doll, feed herself, or make eye contact with doctors.  Dr. Kathleen Armstrong described Dani’s case as, “the most outrageous case of neglect I’ve ever seen.”

Dani now lives with her adoptive parents Bernie and Diane Lierow in a loving home where she is cared for and attended to around the clock.  Michelle Crockett, Dani’s biological mother, gave up her parental rights in exchange for not having to serve time in jail.  Crockett only faced probation and house arrest for the crimes she committed against Danielle.

Dani is now 10-years-old.  She attends school, speech therapy and horseback riding lessons.  She has been potty trained and can feed herself.  She can hold stuffed animals and allows her new parents to hold her.  Though she may never speak more than a few words, her parents find solace in counting the “small steps”.

What do you think of the story about the neglected child, Dani?

Do you feel that her biological mother was properly punished for her crime of neglect?

This is such a sad situation. It is just beyond my wildest imagination how someone can treat ANYONE like this, let alone their own Child and still call themselves a Mother. She doesnt deserve to be a Mother, ever! She may have given up her Maternal Rights to Dani but whose to say she wont ever get PG again? In my opinion I think ANYONE who is ever convicted of Child Abuse and or Neglect should be made to get themselves sterlizied so they can NEVER have any more children to do this too again. This child has a long road ahead of her. No wonder she has failure to thrive. I just cant imagine locking a child up like that and not even caring whether it lived or died. Its just horrible. She needs to spend some time in Jail as does every other parent who does this sort of abuse, the lesson has to begin somewhere and not at the childs expense. I hope Dani can find the love and attention she so desperatly needs.

I just don't understand that if parents can't take care of the children, why don't they give them for adoption.keeping their children in such a shocking state is heartbreaking and outrageous.

This story makes me so sick. Dani's biological mother did not receive proper punishment, and more likely than not needs serious therapy and to be locked up. This is just sad, but thank God for her foster parents. I hope they are giving her every ounce of love that she needs.

I just read the other story through the link, you can't get through a story like that without tears. We need more people like her adoptive family, they have given this little girl more than they will ever know.

I can not believe that all that mother got was a slap on the wrist. What she did to this child is unbelievable. I am so thankful that she was found and hopefully she can get passed all of this someday and be able to live a life full of love and happiness. The life she deserves. Bless that neighbor, she saved this childs life.

It upsets me so much to see parents than can have children easily treat their kids like this. It took us 5 years of trying, treatments, and tears before we conceived. I would have done anything to have a child and had started looking into adoption as our answer. This woman was lucky enough to have a child and did the worst possible thing a mother could do. That mother should have been treated the same way as she treated her daughter, but in jail!!!

That is just an awful story. There should have been a much stronger punishment for that "mother", IMO. That poor child has a long road of recovery ahead of her, and it was that "mothers" fault! Thankfully she is with people now who love her and treat her the way she should be treated. I wish them all the best. As for the "mother", she should have at the very least gotten jail time. Better yet, throw her in a walk-in closet with cockroaches and feces and see how long she lasts. Sorry, this story strikes a nerve!

This mother "gave up her parental rights in exchange for not having to serve time in jail". I want to know why she was given that right to make that decision. Any other criminal does not get to make a decision on whether or not they can get away with their crimes. If you commit a crime, you lose your rights and with that you no longer have the right to your child when you commit the crime against your child. Where is the justice for this little girl when you give her mother a slap on the hand for treating that little girl no better than a caged animal or worse. Let us hope and pray this woman never has any other babies! And the courts/lawyers/police should be looking into why this woman was let off so easily and make sure it never happens again!

I cannot believe she did not get any jail time. Where is the justice? That little girl did not ask to be treated like that and the only thing the mother recived was probation. Some mothers should not be allowed to have kids

I just cannot fathom such cruelty. The sad part is that this goes on even as I write this. This little girl was one of the lucky ones she was fould before she either starved to death or died of abuse. How very sad

I think it is horrible that that little girl has lived through such abuse. she definatly has a long road of recovery ahead of her, and thank god for angels like her adopted parents and all the professionals that love her. I strongly believe that the biological mother should get a heck of alot more punishment for the tourture that she put that baby through. She is getting a slap on the wrist and doesnot deserve such leniency.

I think that the mom needs to have more consequences for how she treated her child! I don't understand how she wasn't put in jail! I am so glad that Dani is now in home, getting the love that she deserves. I'm so glad that there are foster parents who can provide a safe, loving home for children who otherwise may not have that.

How wonderful that Dani now has the loving family that she and all children deserve. As for the so called mother, even prison would have been more humane than what she put that child thru. I think she should have been subjected to exactly what Dani endured.

I cannot honestly believe a mother (or any human being) could possibly do that to a child. This story just breaks my heart and thank God the neighbor saw her in the window. Oh, how I wish she grows a normal life - that poor little girl.
