Birth Of Octuplets Spurs Debate

Birth Of Octuplets Spurs Debate

One young mother and her eight new babies are causing quite a stir in the news recently.  Because of the details surrounding Nadya Suleman’s case, the ethics involved in the birth of her octuplets has become much debated over.  Suleman, who is a 33-year-old single mother of six children from previous in-vitro procedures, currently lives with her parents.

Nadya Suleman's mother, Angela Suleman, has expressed concern over her daughter’s actions and recently told the Associated Press that she was not supportive of her decision to have more children.  Angela Suleman has told the press that her daughter was obsessed with having children and has talked about it since she was a teenager.

The Associated Press reports that all of the 8 babies, 6 boys and 2 girls, were delivered by Cesarean section.  The babies weighed anywhere between 1 pound, 8 ounces and 3 pounds, 4 ounces.  Seven of the eight babies are breathing on their own while one remains on a respirator.  It took 46 doctors and staff to assist in the delivery of these octuplets.

Much of the recent debate has been about whether doctors should have offered the 33-year-old mother of six the option to undergo in-vitro fertilization treatment.  Ethicists also question why the doctors would have implanted so many embryos.  And still others worry about how the mother will raise 14 children, now ranging in age from newborn to 7 years old and whether she will end up relying on public assistance.

A former caregiver to Nadya Suleman’s autistic son, Yolanda Garcia, spoke with the Long Beach Press-Telegram about the mother’s recent delivery.  She said, “From what I could tell back then, she was pretty happy with herself, saying she liked having kids and she wanted 12 kids in all.”

What do you think of the news about the recent octuplet birth?

Do you think doctors are at fault for allowing this mother to receive fertility treatment?

This women has hired a Publicist and looks to gain millions in endorsement deals, book deals and appearances. Lets not forget whoever forks over the most $ for the "First Interview". I think the people supporting her in these endeavors are as demented as she obviously is. The eight little babies are days old and already have dollar signs tattooed on their butts.

This "woman" is actually an obsessed little girl. She is not married, has no father figure for those kids, lives with, and off of, her mom and dad.....and was allowed to give birth to 14 children????????Where is any sanity in this situation? She has....according to my calculations....been pregnant on a continous basis for pretty much the past 9 years! Why didn't any of the doctors do more than question her reasons? They should have accepted their part of the responsibility in allowing this situation to intensify, and acted to stop it. After all, she COULD'NT get pregnant without their procedures. Makes you wonder if she was used as a "guinea pig" for their in-vitro techniques....?

Her own mother has had time to go through counseling because of this......and no one else thought it was time to take a hard look at what was happening? She should be barred from receiving any but the basic assistance needed to keep those kids fed and healthy. She should be required to get a job and prove her ability to take care of them alone.Otherwise, find them homes with RESPONSIBLE people, and for god's sake.... don't allow her to have any MORE KIDS!

I think the doctor was very unethical. That's what I question more than anything else. Yes, I think the mom is a little whacko for doing that, but if she wants them, that's her deal and not mine. I did hear on CNN that she wasn't receiving all the "free" stuff that mothers of multiples usually get.

I agree. This actually makes me ill. How could the doctor do this when he knew she already had six children and lived with her parents with no financial means of her own to support the six children she already had. Not only the mother but I feel the doctor also should undergo a psychological evaluation. The doctor also should have his medical license taken away for doing this procedure and thus letting this situation happen. What was he thinking?

Where are the doctors? Why haven't they come forth and explained their positions about doing such procedures? That would not violate the doctor/patient privilege. They made a purely moral decision. They were not required by law to satisfy her wishes. God bless those children. Their lives are burdened from the first breath - worldwide notoriety, physical and psychological challenges, plus a questionable, solitary parent who is yanked in a minimum of 14 or 15 different directions forever and always.

My main concern is for those children. That is a lot for one person to take care of. I do not understand the Dr.s position, KNOWING that she already had 6 children and KNOWING that there was a chance that the in-vitro could very well take that many embryos. I wonder if this woman even needed assistance getting pregnant or if she just wanted that many children? Can you imagine the hospital bill with 46 different dr.s on it. This just never should have happened. God bless those children.

This is definately two fold of my feelings. Firstly, I think it is great that there is a woman out there, who will give the love to these children, as there are a lot of kids out there born as "oops", and they do not have the love from their parents. Now, the real opinion! I think the doctor should lose his license for doing this! She has 6 kids already, living at home and no father figure. 14 kids - omg, how is she going to do it. What bothers me moreso is the fact that she is DEMANDING money and help from other people. What is her true motive in all of this? This is sounding contradicting of what I am trying to say, but I guess overall my opinion is that she should not have gotten pregnant. 6 is enough!!!
